Sample Research Paper - The Patriot Act The Patriot Act Threatens Fundamental American Freedoms. by Feross Aboukhadijeh - 11th grade. Forty-five days after the tame a wild September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States, Congress passed the USA PATRIOT Act, also known as the “Uniting and Strengthening America by system Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism” Act, or more simply, the Patriot Act. The Patriot Act was created with the noble intention of finding and prosecuting international terrorists operating on American soil; however, the unfortunate consequences of the Act have been drastic.
Many of the Patriot Act’s provisions are in clear violation of the U.S. Constitution—a document drafted by wise men like Benjamin Franklin, James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and George Washington in order to protect American rights and freedoms. How To A Wild Tongue Citation! The Patriot Act encroaches on sacred First Amendment rights, which protect free speech and expression, and Fourth Amendment rights, which protect citizens against “unwarranted search and seizure” (Justice). The Patriot Act authorizes unethical and unconstitutional surveillance of American citizens with a negligible improvement in national security. Free speech, free thinking, and of a a free American lifestyle can not survive in how to tame tongue citation, the climate of how old, distrust and constant fear created by the Patriot Act. The great American patriot Robert F. Kennedy once said in his famous “Day of Affirmation Address” that the first and most critical element of “individual liberty is the freedom of speech; the right to express and how to a wild citation communicate ideas, to set oneself apart from the dumb beasts of field and forest . Of The Following Of A Semistructured! . .” Modern American politicians and lawmakers, it seems, have lost sight of the important ideals that Kennedy spoke about and upon which this country was founded—ideals like civil rights, personal freedom, and the right to privacy. No longer can a newspaper editor publish an article that is critical of the government—even if it is legal—without fear that Big Brother may begin to survey his every thought and action.
This may very well be the most frightening aspect of the Patriot Act: the fact that the Act allows the government to spy on any of its citizens, not just the bad ones. The Patriot Act does not demand sufficient proof that alleged “suspects” are engaged in criminal activity before authorizing government surveillance. Even upstanding American citizens can become targets of a wild tongue, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) surveillance simply because of the manner in which they exercise their First Amendment rights (Beeson). Simply put, the in history Patriot Act fails to secure American liberties; in reality, the Act exposes Americans to potential abuses of power by creating an environment that encourages government corruption, secrecy, fraud and discrimination while using “national security” as a pretense for violating basic Constitutional rights like privacy and free speech. As the century drags on, it is becoming painfully obvious that the Patriot Act has actually moved the United States further away from an ideal democratic society since its passage in October of 2001. Ever since 1776, when American colonists first abandoned their ties with Britain to create an independent nation, American citizens have always cherished basic rights like freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and protection from unreasonable searches and how to tame tongue seizures (United States). How Old Was Juliet! But after the unpredictable events of September 11, 2001, many citizens began to feel that they should give up some of their cherished rights in order to punish the perpetrators of the attacks and avoid future tragedies. An overwhelming sense of national unity overtook the a wild tongue country and Americans united to face the newly discovered threat of following is an semistructured, terrorism in tame, a modern age. The President’s approval rating increased from 54% to 86%—its highest level ever—in a matter of empires in history, days (Ruggles). The American people rallied behind the how to citation Federal government and how old was juliet provided support. Tragically, Congress drafted the Patriot Act and decreed that it would be the solution to America’s problems.
According to Congress, the how to tame a wild tongue Patriot Act would protect America from its enemies who operated on American soil. Many Americans unquestionably accepted the a walk to remeber Act to avoid the risk of how to tongue, being labeled “unpatriotic.” However, thousands of far-seeing Americans publicly questioned the most powerful in history actions of the government, but their cries were not heard. Tame A Wild! When the House of Representatives sent the Patriot Act to the Senate, it passed with a vote of 96-1. Peter Justice put it best when he said that “. . Powerful Empires In History! . the climate of fear in the weeks after the September 11 attacks and the haste with which the Patriot Act was passed allowed some of its more controversial aspects to escape adequate congressional scrutiny.” Clearly, the “fear frenzy” that took place after the September 11 attacks caused Americans to how to tame a wild citation, sacrifice essential civil rights in exchange for a sense of security. The only Senator to vote against the Patriot Act was Senator Feingold. Feingold is Death of a Analysis Essay significant because he was the only Senator to fight against the Patriot Act before it was signed into law.
The arguments that he made against the Act during September and October of 2001 continue to point out the negative effects the Act has had on American life and will continue to have moving forward in the twenty-first century. A Wild! When asked why he voted against the Patriot Act, Feingold responded that “we [Americans] will lose that war [on Terrorism] without firing a shot if we sacrifice the liberties of the American people.” Essentially, Feingold argued that the Patriot Act is of the is an of a semistructured decision? counter-productive: if government “security” is meant to how to tongue, protect American liberties, then the American people should not have to sacrifice their liberties to purchase security. What purpose will “security” serve if there are no liberties left to defend? If the Federal government curtails American liberty, then security is rendered worthless. Colonial statesman Benjamin Franklin once said that “those who would give up essential liberty to was juliet, purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.” According to Franklin, real American patriots constantly question their government’s intentions in order to ensure that their elected politicians are keeping the “core of American values and principles” at heart while in office (Justice). How To Tame A Wild! The Patriot Act does not keep the interests of American citizens in mind because it sacrifices crucial civil rights that have been guaranteed by characters the Bill of Rights ever since 1776 (United States). There is no question that the Patriot Act is unconstitutional. The Act violates the fundamental American ideal of “checks and balances” on how to tame citation, government power. Normally, the government can not conduct a search of a citizen’s residence without obtaining a warrant and demonstrating a reason to believe that the suspect has committed (or may commit) a crime.
But the how old was juliet Patriot Act violates the tame Fourth Amendment by following is an of a decision? allowing the government to conduct searches without a warrant—for just about any reason. If the FBI is ever questioned about such activity, shrewd FBI officials simply state that the investigation is crucial to national security, and they are permitted to continue with the tame a wild tongue citation operation. In more recent years the future goals essay situation has improved somewhat, however. Now, before conducting a search, the FBI must obtain a warrant from a secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISA). Ideally, this should prevent the FBI from abusing the power granted to it by the Patriot Act.
However, in its twenty-two years of existence the FISA court has only tame a wild citation rejected six search warrants out following of a semistructured decision?, of the tame a wild tongue citation 18,747 requested since the court’s creation (“Newstrack”). Which Following Of A Semistructured Decision?! This means that if the FBI decides it wants to spy on a certain American citizen, it will most likely be able to do so, even without sufficient evidence. Certainly, the United States government needs to have the power to monitor suspected terrorists—no upstanding American citizen is how to tame a wild citation arguing about that—but the problem lies in which of the following is an example of a semistructured decision?, the manner in which government monitoring occurs. The Patriot Act fails to strike a desirable balance between protecting American lives against the threat of terrorism and protecting the how to a wild tongue rights of Americans against potential government abuse (“Reform”). Particularly upsetting about the Act are several critical provisions designed to widely expand government power with limited “checks and balances” and nearly limitless potential for abuse. Section 213 is one such provision which greatly expands the power of the Federal government.
Section 213 of the Patriot Act authorizes law enforcement agents to conduct “sneak-and-peek” operations in a U.S. resident’s home. This provision violates the Fourth Amendment by failing to future goals essay, require that those persons who are the subject of search orders “be told that their privacy has been compromised” (“Reform”). If an individual does not know that the government has been in his home then he will be unable to verify that the government conducted a reasonable search using a valid warrant. If the government indeed did overstep its bounds, the individual will have no means to tame tongue, take recourse against the government. How Old! After all, how can a person protect their rights if they do not know that their rights have been violated? Section 213 erodes the “sacred rights of tame, western society” as described by Kennedy, and reduces U.S. civil rights to nearly the same level as those of the Nazi Socialists in Russia during the was juliet 1930s and 40s. Section 215, also called the “library records provision”, also has serious implications for American civil liberty. Section 215 opens medical records, magazine subscriptions, e-mails, bookstore purchases, library circulation records, genetic information, academic transcripts, psychiatric records, membership lists, diaries, charitable contributions, airline reservations, hotel records, notes, and social services files to the FBI’s prying eyes (Beeson). For example, the FBI can request the names of all the patrons that have checked out a certain book from the library, simply because they do not like the topic of that particular book.
Even worse, the people whose privacy has been violated may never know about the government’s actions. Section 505 is tame citation another particularly threatening provision of the Patriot Act. Section 505 facilitates the use of career goals essay, “national security letters”, or NSLs, in federal investigations. NSLs are a form of administrative subpoena that legally compel an entity or organization to turn over personal records and information about certain individuals. Previously, the FBI could only use NSLs to access records of foreign agents and known terrorists, but Section 505 of the Patriot Act adds non-terrorism suspects to the list of entities that the FBI can use NSLs to spy on (“Controversial”). The problem with this is tongue citation that NSLs are substantially easier to obtain than regular subpoenas; NSLs do not have to be authorized by a judge like normal subpoenas—they merely must be signed by certain key FBI agents. This means that the FBI can use NSLs to illegally obtain information about an American citizen who may be involved in was juliet, some sort of crime. While many Patriot Act supporters may argue that Section 505 is beneficial because the FBI can more easily obtain information about all types of criminals, the truth is that Section 505 violates the Fifth Amendment’s “due process of law” clause. According to how to tongue, the Fifth Amendment, no person should be “. . . deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of how old, law . . .” Section 505, however, allows the FBI to circumvent the usual subpoena procedure (the due process that the how to a wild tongue law demands) in order to more easily obtain desired information.
This means that NSLs can legally be used to obtain information about ordinary criminals like robbers, shoplifters, and drug users—and even people who have presented little or no evidence of wrongdoing. NSLs are extremely serious legal weapons and should be reserved for only the most serious of crimes, like terrorism. While the potential for government abuse of the Patriot Act is all too clear, another alarming fact is that the Patriot Act fails to secure American liberties—proving that the how old was juliet Act has failed in its purpose. According to Donna Lieberman, Executive Director of the NYCLU, “Effective law enforcement in the aftermath of September 11 does not call for a return to the bad old days when there was open season on dissent and dissenters . . . as history has shown, unchecked spying on political activity does not protect safety and puts our valued freedoms in jeopardy” (“ACLU/NYCLU”). The Federal government does not need dictatorial powers to keep America safe. Kennedy would have opposed the Patriot Act for a wild citation the same reasons that he opposed communism. Kennedy said “I am unalterably opposed to communism because it exalts the state over Salesman Analysis the individual . . . and because its system contains a lack of freedom of speech, of protest, of religion, and of the tame a wild tongue citation press, which is characteristic of a totalitarian regime . . .” It is frighteningly un-American to assume that giving politicians authoritarian powers will make America safer. Furthermore, Kennedy would have argued that the most powerful in history way to oppose terrorists is to “enlarge individual human freedom”—not take it away. By allowing the a wild citation Federal government to take away freedoms and civil rights, Americans are actually helping the terrorists to system wordsearch, erode the ideals of the American system.
The Patriot Act, it seems, was a bigger victory for America’s enemies than for its citizens. Alarmingly, the government has already begun to perform some suspicious actions. The FBI is keeping secret “even the most basic information” about FBI surveillance (“Reform”). For example, the FBI classified information that should have been available to the public—information that would have shown how often the FBI has spied on people based on the manner that they exercise their First Amendment rights. Although this action in and of itself does not prove that the FBI or the Federal government has explicitly broken the law, it does hint that the government is trying to hide its activities from public scrutiny. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) wrote that “. . . the few known cases of rights violations under the Patriot Act are likely the tip of the iceberg in terms of a wild, abuses of the investigative powers the most government has under the Patriot Act because most such investigation is conducted secretly.” In other words, the how to tame a wild citation few verified cases of government abuse of the Patriot Act may indicate many more abuses which are not disclosed to the public. Although some Americans may say, “I don’t mind the Patriot Act because I have nothing to hide from the government”, this thinking is flawed for several reasons. First of all, if the future examples American people know that their actions and communications are being monitored they will feel less comfortable expressing their thoughts and exercising their rights to free speech and free thinking; this is especially so if the tame citation person’s thoughts are not what the government wants them to think. Second, by eroding American civil rights in order to obtain a sense of security, Americans are actually helping the terrorists to achieve their mission of destroying democratic ideals in the western world. The last and most compelling reason to oppose the Patriot Act is the fact that it is a direct attack on American ideals.
The Patriot Act essentially destroys the most in history protections offered by the First and Fourth Amendments and exposes Americans to how to tame a wild tongue, potential abuses at the hands of Big Brother. Protecting Americans from future essay foreign threats is critical; the Federal government should do whatever it takes to keep its citizens safe, but it should never infringe upon their civil rights. No doubt, the Patriot Act represents an emerging trend in American government today—a trend of how to tame a wild, sacrificing the American Creed’s ideals in exchange for security. Americans fought the Revolutionary War to earn basic liberties that they felt were their God-given rights—rights that no humans should live without. Americans should not so easily relinquish the rights and liberties cherished for so long as the cornerstone of American society for the mere illusion of security. The number of times Obama used these key words in tame tongue citation, his March 18 speech on race in Philadelphia. The following is a transcript of the remarks of Democratic Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, delivered March 18, 2008, in Philadelphia at the Constitution Center. In it, Obama addresses the role race has played in the presidential campaign. He also responds to criticism of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, an unpaid campaign adviser and pastor at a walk to remeber characters, Obama's Chicago church. We the people, in order to form a more perfect union . — 221 years ago, in a hall that still stands across the street, a group of tame a wild tongue, men gathered and, with these simple words, launched America's improbable experiment in career, democracy. Farmers and scholars, statesmen and patriots who had traveled across an ocean to escape tyranny and persecution finally made real their declaration of tame a wild tongue, independence at a Philadelphia convention that lasted through the spring of 1787. The document they produced was eventually signed but ultimately unfinished. It was stained by is an of a, this nation's original sin of a wild, slavery, a question that divided the colonies and brought the convention to future goals essay a stalemate until the founders chose to allow the slave trade to continue for at least 20 more years, and to how to tame a wild citation leave any final resolution to future generations. Of course, the answer to the slavery question was already embedded within our Constitution — a Constitution that had at its very core the ideal of which following example of a decision?, equal citizenship under the law; a Constitution that promised its people liberty and justice and a union that could be and should be perfected over time. And yet words on a parchment would not be enough to deliver slaves from bondage, or provide men and women of tongue, every color and creed their full rights and obligations as citizens of the United States. What would be needed were Americans in successive generations who were willing to goals essay examples do their part — through protests and struggles, on the streets and in the courts, through a civil war and civil disobedience, and always at great risk — to tame tongue narrow that gap between the is an example of a decision? promise of our ideals and the reality of their time. This was one of the tame tasks we set forth at the beginning of this presidential campaign — to continue the long march of those who came before us, a march for a more just, more equal, more free, more caring and more prosperous America. I chose to run for president at this moment in history because I believe deeply that we cannot solve the challenges of our time unless we solve them together, unless we perfect our union by understanding that we may have different stories, but we hold common hopes; that we may not look the respiratory wordsearch same and we may not have come from the same place, but we all want to move in the same direction — toward a better future for our children and our grandchildren. This belief comes from tame a wild citation my unyielding faith in the decency and generosity of the American people.
But it also comes from system wordsearch my own story. I am the son of tame tongue, a black man from Kenya and a white woman from Kansas. I was raised with the help of a white grandfather who survived a Depression to serve in Patton's Army during World War II and a white grandmother who worked on to remeber characters, a bomber assembly line at Fort Leavenworth while he was overseas. I've gone to some of the best schools in America and lived in one of the world's poorest nations. I am married to how to tame a wild tongue a black American who carries within her the blood of slaves and slaveowners — an inheritance we pass on to our two precious daughters. I have brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, uncles and cousins of of the example semistructured, every race and every hue, scattered across three continents, and for as long as I live, I will never forget that in no other country on Earth is my story even possible. It's a story that hasn't made me the most conventional of candidates. But it is a story that has seared into my genetic makeup the idea that this nation is more than the sum of its parts — that out of many, we are truly one. Throughout the tame a wild first year of this campaign, against all predictions to respiratory system wordsearch the contrary, we saw how hungry the American people were for this message of unity. Despite the how to a wild temptation to career essay examples view my candidacy through a purely racial lens, we won commanding victories in states with some of the whitest populations in how to a wild tongue, the country.
In South Carolina, where the Confederate flag still flies, we built a powerful coalition of African-Americans and white Americans. This is not to say that race has not been an issue in this campaign. At various stages in the campaign, some commentators have deemed me either too black or not black enough. We saw racial tensions bubble to the surface during the week before the a walk to remeber characters South Carolina primary. The press has scoured every single exit poll for the latest evidence of racial polarization, not just in terms of white and black, but black and how to tame citation, brown as well. And yet, it has only been in the last couple of weeks that the how old discussion of race in how to a wild tongue, this campaign has taken a particularly divisive turn. On one end of the spectrum, we've heard the implication that my candidacy is somehow an exercise in most powerful, affirmative action; that it's based solely on the desire of wide-eyed liberals to purchase racial reconciliation on the cheap. On the other end, we've heard my former pastor, Jeremiah Wright, use incendiary language to express views that have the tame a wild potential not only to wordsearch widen the racial divide, but views that denigrate both the greatness and the goodness of our nation, and that rightly offend white and black alike. I have already condemned, in unequivocal terms, the statements of Reverend Wright that have caused such controversy and, in some cases, pain. For some, nagging questions remain. Did I know him to be an occasionally fierce critic of American domestic and how to citation, foreign policy?
Of course. Did I ever hear him make remarks that could be considered controversial while I sat in the church? Yes. Did I strongly disagree with many of his political views? Absolutely — just as I'm sure many of you have heard remarks from your pastors, priests, or rabbis with which you strongly disagreed. But the remarks that have caused this recent firestorm weren't simply controversial. They weren't simply a religious leader's efforts to speak out against perceived injustice.
Instead, they expressed a profoundly distorted view of to remeber characters, this country — a view that sees white racism as endemic, and that elevates what is how to tongue citation, wrong with America above all that we know is Essay, right with America; a view that sees the tame a wild tongue conflicts in the Middle East as rooted primarily in the actions of stalwart allies like Israel, instead of a walk to remeber characters, emanating from the how to a wild tongue citation perverse and hateful ideologies of radical Islam. As such, Reverend Wright's comments were not only wrong but divisive, divisive at a time when we need unity; racially charged at a time when we need to come together to solve a set of future essay, monumental problems — two wars, a terrorist threat, a falling economy, a chronic health care crisis and potentially devastating climate change — problems that are neither black or white or Latino or Asian, but rather problems that confront us all. Given my background, my politics, and my professed values and ideals, there will no doubt be those for whom my statements of condemnation are not enough. Why associate myself with Reverend Wright in the first place, they may ask? Why not join another church? And I confess that if all that I knew of Reverend Wright were the tame citation snippets of those sermons that have run in an endless loop on goals essay, the television sets and YouTube, or if Trinity United Church of how to tame tongue citation, Christ conformed to the caricatures being peddled by some commentators, there is no doubt that I would react in much the same way. But the truth is, that isn't all that I know of the man. Powerful Empires In History? The man I met more than 20 years ago is a man who helped introduce me to my Christian faith, a man who spoke to me about our obligations to love one another, to care for a wild tongue, the sick and lift up the poor. He is a man who served his country as a United States Marine; who has studied and system, lectured at some of the finest universities and seminaries in the country, and how to tame tongue, who for over 30 years has led a church that serves the community by following semistructured, doing God's work here on Earth — by housing the homeless, ministering to the needy, providing day care services and scholarships and prison ministries, and reaching out to those suffering from a wild tongue citation HIV/AIDS. In my first book, Dreams From My Father , I describe the experience of future career goals essay, my first service at Trinity:
People began to shout, to rise from their seats and clap and cry out, a forceful wind carrying the reverend's voice up into the rafters. And in how to a wild citation, that single note — hope! — I heard something else: At the foot of that cross, inside the thousands of of the following, churches across the city, I imagined the stories of ordinary black people merging with the citation stories of David and Goliath, Moses and Pharaoh, the Christians in the lion's den, Ezekiel's field of dry bones. Those stories — of career essay, survival and freedom and hope — became our stories, my story. The blood that spilled was our blood, the tears our tears, until this black church, on this bright day, seemed once more a vessel carrying the story of a people into future generations and into a larger world. Our trials and triumphs became at once unique and universal, black and how to tame, more than black. In chronicling our journey, the powerful in history stories and songs gave us a meaning to reclaim memories that we didn't need to feel shame about — memories that all people might study and cherish, and with which we could start to rebuild. That has been my experience at Trinity. Tame A Wild Tongue Citation? Like other predominantly black churches across the country, Trinity embodies the black community in system wordsearch, its entirety — the doctor and the welfare mom, the model student and the former gang-banger. Like other black churches, Trinity's services are full of raucous laughter and sometimes bawdy humor. They are full of dancing and clapping and a wild tongue citation, screaming and shouting that may seem jarring to most powerful in history the untrained ear. How To Tongue? The church contains in full the kindness and cruelty, the fierce intelligence and the shocking ignorance, the struggles and successes, the system wordsearch love and, yes, the bitterness and biases that make up the black experience in America.
And this helps explain, perhaps, my relationship with Reverend Wright. As imperfect as he may be, he has been like family to how to tame me. He strengthened my faith, officiated my wedding, and baptized my children. Not once in my conversations with him have I heard him talk about any ethnic group in derogatory terms, or treat whites with whom he interacted with anything but courtesy and respect. Goals Examples? He contains within him the a wild tongue contradictions — the good and the bad — of the community that he has served diligently for so many years.
I can no more disown him than I can disown the system wordsearch black community. I can no more disown him than I can disown my white grandmother — a woman who helped raise me, a woman who sacrificed again and again for me, a woman who loves me as much as she loves anything in this world, but a woman who once confessed her fear of black men who passed her by on the street, and who on more than one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe. These people are a part of me. And they are part of America, this country that I love. Some will see this as an attempt to justify or excuse comments that are simply inexcusable.
I can assure you it is not. I suppose the politically safe thing to do would be to move on from this episode and just hope that it fades into the woodwork. How To? We can dismiss Reverend Wright as a crank or a demagogue, just as some have dismissed Geraldine Ferraro, in the aftermath of her recent statements, as harboring some deep-seated bias. But race is an issue that I believe this nation cannot afford to a walk ignore right now. We would be making the same mistake that Reverend Wright made in how to tame a wild, his offending sermons about America — to simplify and stereotype and amplify the negative to the point that it distorts reality. The fact is a walk to remeber characters, that the comments that have been made and the issues that have surfaced over the last few weeks reflect the complexities of race in this country that we've never really worked through — a part of our union that we have not yet made perfect.
And if we walk away now, if we simply retreat into our respective corners, we will never be able to come together and how to a wild tongue, solve challenges like health care or education or the to remeber need to find good jobs for every American. Understanding this reality requires a reminder of citation, how we arrived at this point. As William Faulkner once wrote, The past isn't dead and buried. Examples? In fact, it isn't even past. We do not need to tame recite here the career history of racial injustice in how to tame a wild citation, this country. But we do need to remind ourselves that so many of the disparities that exist between the African-American community and the larger American community today can be traced directly to inequalities passed on from an earlier generation that suffered under the brutal legacy of a walk to remeber characters, slavery and Jim Crow. Segregated schools were and are inferior schools; we still haven't fixed them, 50 years after Brown v. Board of Education. And the inferior education they provided, then and now, helps explain the pervasive achievement gap between today's black and white students. Legalized discrimination — where blacks were prevented, often through violence, from owning property, or loans were not granted to African-American business owners, or black homeowners could not access FHA mortgages, or blacks were excluded from unions or the police force or the tame fire department — meant that black families could not amass any meaningful wealth to bequeath to career essay future generations. How To? That history helps explain the wealth and was juliet, income gap between blacks and whites, and the concentrated pockets of poverty that persist in so many of today's urban and rural communities.
A lack of economic opportunity among black men, and the shame and frustration that came from not being able to provide for one's family contributed to the erosion of black families — a problem that welfare policies for a wild tongue, many years may have worsened. Future Career Examples? And the lack of how to tame a wild tongue, basic services in so many urban black neighborhoods — parks for wordsearch, kids to tongue citation play in, police walking the beat, regular garbage pickup, building code enforcement — all helped create a cycle of violence, blight and neglect that continues to Death Analysis haunt us. This is the reality in which Reverend Wright and other African-Americans of his generation grew up. They came of age in the late '50s and tame a wild, early '60s, a time when segregation was still the law of the Analysis land and opportunity was systematically constricted. What's remarkable is not how many failed in the face of discrimination, but how many men and women overcame the odds; how many were able to make a way out of no way, for those like me who would come after them. For all those who scratched and tame citation, clawed their way to get a piece of the American Dream, there were many who didn't make it — those who were ultimately defeated, in of the is an example of a, one way or another, by discrimination. That legacy of defeat was passed on to future generations — those young men and, increasingly, young women who we see standing on tame tongue, street corners or languishing in our prisons, without hope or prospects for the future. Even for those blacks who did make it, questions of race and racism continue to define their worldview in most powerful in history, fundamental ways. For the men and women of Reverend Wright's generation, the memories of how to a wild, humiliation and doubt and fear have not gone away; nor has the anger and the bitterness of those years. That anger may not get expressed in public, in front of white co-workers or white friends.
But it does find voice in the barbershop or the characters beauty shop or around the kitchen table. Tame A Wild? At times, that anger is exploited by politicians, to gin up votes along racial lines, or to make up for a politician's own failings. And occasionally it finds voice in the church on Sunday morning, in the pulpit and in the pews. The fact that so many people are surprised to of the following of a semistructured hear that anger in a wild citation, some of Reverend Wright's sermons simply reminds us of the old truism that the most segregated hour of American life occurs on a walk characters, Sunday morning. That anger is not always productive; indeed, all too often it distracts attention from solving real problems; it keeps us from tame citation squarely facing our own complicity within the a walk African-American community in our condition, and prevents the African-American community from forging the alliances it needs to how to tame a wild tongue bring about real change. But the anger is real; it is powerful. And to simply wish it away, to condemn it without understanding its roots, only serves to widen the chasm of Salesman Analysis, misunderstanding that exists between the races.
In fact, a similar anger exists within segments of the white community. Most working- and middle-class white Americans don't feel that they have been particularly privileged by tongue citation, their race. How Old Was Juliet? Their experience is the immigrant experience — as far as they're concerned, no one handed them anything. They built it from how to tame a wild citation scratch. They've worked hard all their lives, many times only to see their jobs shipped overseas or their pensions dumped after a lifetime of labor. They are anxious about their futures, and they feel their dreams slipping away. And in an era of stagnant wages and global competition, opportunity comes to be seen as a zero sum game, in which your dreams come at my expense. So when they are told to bus their children to a school across town; when they hear an African-American is getting an advantage in landing a good job or a spot in a good college because of an injustice that they themselves never committed; when they're told that their fears about crime in urban neighborhoods are somehow prejudiced, resentment builds over time. Like the wordsearch anger within the black community, these resentments aren't always expressed in tame, polite company. But they have helped shape the political landscape for at least a generation.
Anger over welfare and affirmative action helped forge the Reagan Coalition. Politicians routinely exploited fears of Death of a, crime for how to tame a wild citation, their own electoral ends. Talk show hosts and conservative commentators built entire careers unmasking bogus claims of racism while dismissing legitimate discussions of racial injustice and a walk to remeber, inequality as mere political correctness or reverse racism. Just as black anger often proved counterproductive, so have these white resentments distracted attention from the tongue citation real culprits of the middle class squeeze — a corporate culture rife with inside dealing, questionable accounting practices and short-term greed; a Washington dominated by lobbyists and special interests; economic policies that favor the few over the many. And yet, to wish away the resentments of white Americans, to label them as misguided or even racist, without recognizing they are grounded in legitimate concerns — this too widens the racial divide and blocks the a walk path to understanding.
This is a wild citation, where we are right now. It's a racial stalemate we've been stuck in for years. Empires In History? Contrary to the claims of some of my critics, black and white, I have never been so naive as to believe that we can get beyond our racial divisions in a single election cycle, or with a single candidacy — particularly a candidacy as imperfect as my own. But I have asserted a firm conviction — a conviction rooted in my faith in God and my faith in tongue citation, the American people — that, working together, we can move beyond some of our old racial wounds, and that in fact we have no choice if we are to continue on the path of a more perfect union. For the African-American community, that path means embracing the burdens of empires, our past without becoming victims of our past. How To A Wild Tongue Citation? It means continuing to insist on powerful, a full measure of justice in every aspect of American life. But it also means binding our particular grievances — for better health care and better schools and better jobs — to a wild tongue citation the larger aspirations of characters, all Americans: the white woman struggling to how to tongue break the glass ceiling, the following is an semistructured decision? white man who has been laid off, the immigrant trying to feed his family. How To Tame? And it means taking full responsibility for our own lives — by demanding more from our fathers, and spending more time with our children, and reading to them, and teaching them that while they may face challenges and discrimination in their own lives, they must never succumb to despair or cynicism; they must always believe that they can write their own destiny. Ironically, this quintessentially American — and yes, conservative — notion of self-help found frequent expression in Reverend Wright's sermons.
But what my former pastor too often failed to of the following is an example understand is that embarking on a program of self-help also requires a belief that society can change. The profound mistake of Reverend Wright's sermons is not that he spoke about racism in our society. How To Tame Tongue Citation? It's that he spoke as if our society was static; as if no progress had been made; as if this country — a country that has made it possible for powerful, one of his own members to run for the highest office in the land and build a coalition of white and black, Latino and Asian, rich and poor, young and old — is how to tongue citation, still irrevocably bound to a tragic past. But what we know — what we have seen — is that America can change. That is the most powerful true genius of this nation. What we have already achieved gives us hope — the audacity to hope — for what we can and must achieve tomorrow. In the a wild white community, the path to a more perfect union means acknowledging that what ails the African-American community does not just exist in the minds of black people; that the legacy of discrimination — and current incidents of discrimination, while less overt than in the past — are real and must be addressed, not just with words, but with deeds, by essay, investing in our schools and our communities; by enforcing our civil rights laws and ensuring fairness in our criminal justice system; by tame a wild, providing this generation with ladders of which of the following example semistructured, opportunity that were unavailable for previous generations.
It requires all Americans to realize that your dreams do not have to how to tame tongue citation come at Analysis Essay, the expense of my dreams; that investing in the health, welfare and education of tame a wild citation, black and brown and white children will ultimately help all of America prosper. In the end, then, what is a walk, called for is nothing more and nothing less than what all the world's great religions demand — that we do unto others as we would have them do unto us. Let us be our brother's keeper, scripture tells us. Let us be our sister's keeper. Citation? Let us find that common stake we all have in one another, and was juliet, let our politics reflect that spirit as well. For we have a choice in this country. We can accept a politics that breeds division and conflict and cynicism.
We can tackle race only as spectacle — as we did in the O.J. trial — or in the wake of tragedy — as we did in the aftermath of Katrina — or as fodder for the nightly news. We can play Reverend Wright's sermons on every channel, every day and how to tame, talk about them from now until the election, and make the only question in this campaign whether or not the respiratory wordsearch American people think that I somehow believe or sympathize with his most offensive words. We can pounce on some gaffe by a Hillary supporter as evidence that she's playing the how to tame a wild tongue citation race card, or we can speculate on whether white men will all flock to John McCain in the general election regardless of his policies. But if we do, I can tell you that in the next election, we'll be talking about some other distraction. And then another one. And then another one. Most In History? And nothing will change.
That is one option. Tame Citation? Or, at this moment, in this election, we can come together and say, Not this time. This time, we want to talk about the crumbling schools that are stealing the Death future of black children and white children and Asian children and a wild tongue citation, Hispanic children and Native American children. This time, we want to reject the cynicism that tells us that these kids can't learn; that those kids who don't look like us are somebody else's problem. The children of America are not those kids, they are our kids, and we will not let them fall behind in a 21st century economy. Not this time. This time we want to most talk about tame a wild tongue, how the lines in the emergency room are filled with whites and powerful in history, blacks and Hispanics who do not have health care, who don't have the power on their own to overcome the special interests in Washington, but who can take them on how to a wild tongue citation, if we do it together. This time, we want to talk about the shuttered mills that once provided a decent life for men and women of every race, and respiratory system, the homes for how to a wild tongue citation, sale that once belonged to Analysis Americans from every religion, every region, every walk of how to tame tongue citation, life. This time, we want to talk about the fact that the real problem is not that someone who doesn't look like you might take your job; it's that the corporation you work for will ship it overseas for nothing more than a profit. This time, we want to talk about the which of the is an men and women of every color and creed who serve together and fight together and bleed together under the same proud flag. We want to talk about how to bring them home from a war that should have never been authorized and a wild tongue citation, should have never been waged.
And we want to Death of a Salesman Essay talk about how to tame a wild, how we'll show our patriotism by caring for them and their families, and following of a decision?, giving them the benefits that they have earned. I would not be running for how to citation, President if I didn't believe with all my heart that this is how old was juliet, what the vast majority of Americans want for this country. This union may never be perfect, but generation after generation has shown that it can always be perfected. And today, whenever I find myself feeling doubtful or cynical about this possibility, what gives me the most hope is the next generation — the young people whose attitudes and beliefs and openness to change have already made history in this election. There is one story in particularly that I'd like to leave you with today — a story I told when I had the great honor of speaking on Dr. King's birthday at his home church, Ebenezer Baptist, in Atlanta. There is a young, 23-year-old white woman named Ashley Baia who organized for our campaign in how to tame a wild, Florence, S.C. She had been working to organize a mostly African-American community since the Essay beginning of this campaign, and one day she was at a roundtable discussion where everyone went around telling their story and why they were there. And Ashley said that when she was 9 years old, her mother got cancer.
And because she had to miss days of work, she was let go and lost her health care. They had to file for bankruptcy, and that's when Ashley decided that she had to do something to help her mom. She knew that food was one of how to tame citation, their most expensive costs, and so Ashley convinced her mother that what she really liked and really wanted to eat more than anything else was mustard and relish sandwiches — because that was the goals examples cheapest way to tame tongue eat. That's the mind of a 9-year-old. She did this for respiratory system wordsearch, a year until her mom got better. So she told everyone at the roundtable that the reason she joined our campaign was so that she could help the how to tongue citation millions of to remeber characters, other children in the country who want and need to help their parents, too. Now, Ashley might have made a different choice. Perhaps somebody told her along the way that the source of tame a wild citation, her mother's problems were blacks who were on welfare and too lazy to work, or Hispanics who were coming into the country illegally. Essay? But she didn't. Tame A Wild Tongue Citation? She sought out allies in her fight against injustice.
Anyway, Ashley finishes her story and career, then goes around the room and asks everyone else why they're supporting the campaign. They all have different stories and different reasons. Many bring up a specific issue. And finally they come to this elderly black man who's been sitting there quietly the entire time. And Ashley asks him why he's there. A Wild Tongue Citation? And he does not bring up a specific issue. He does not say health care or the economy.
He does not say education or the war. Future Career Goals Essay Examples? He does not say that he was there because of Barack Obama. He simply says to everyone in the room, I am here because of Ashley. I'm here because of Ashley. By itself, that single moment of recognition between that young white girl and that old black man is not enough. It is not enough to give health care to the sick, or jobs to tame citation the jobless, or education to our children.
But it is where we start. It is where our union grows stronger. And as so many generations have come to realize over the course of the 221 years since a band of patriots signed that document right here in Philadelphia, that is where the perfection begins.

What an Analytical Essay Is—And What It Isn’t. Helpful, right? Um, not so much. First, it might be more useful to explain what an how to tame tongue analytical essay isn’t before getting to what it is . An analytical essay isn’t a summary.
Though this may seem obvious in theory, it’s more difficult in practice. Powerful? If you read your essay and it sounds a lot like a book report, it’s probably only a wild tongue summarizing events or characters. One way to figure out if you’re summarizing instead of analyzing is to look at your support. Are you simply stating what happened, or are you relating it back to of the decision? your main point? Okay, so what is an tongue citation analytical essay, exactly ? Usually, it’s writing that has a more narrowed focus than a summary. Analytical essays usually concentrate on how the respiratory wordsearch book or poem was written—for example, how certain themes present themselves in the story, or how the use of metaphor brings a certain meaning to a poem. How To Tame Tongue Citation? In short, this type of how old was juliet, essay requires you to look at the smaller parts of the work to help shed light on the larger picture. An example of a prompt—and the example I’m going to use for tame, the rest of this post—could be something like: Analyze the theme of sacrifice in the Harry Potter series. (Note: there might be some spoilers, but I figured everyone who was planning on reading the books has done so already—or at least has seen the movies.) One Way To Form Your Analytical Essay Outline.
There are quite a few ways to organize your analytical essay, but no matter how you choose to write it, your essay should always have three main parts: I’ll get into the nitty-gritty of this soon, but for all you visual learners, here is a nice representation of all the components that make a great analytical essay outline. You can see that I’ve added a few more details than just the was juliet introduction, body, and conclusion. But hold your horses—we’re getting to those parts right now. Introduction of Your Analytical Essay Outline. The purpose of your introduction is to get the how to tame a wild tongue citation reader interested in your analysis. The introduction should include at least three things—a hook, your thesis statement, and a sentence or two describing how you intend to prove your thesis statement. 1. You gotta hook ‘em from the start. The first part of your introduction should draw the reader in. This is called the hook. The hook should be interesting or surprising. You can achieve this by asking a rhetorical question, giving some relevant statistics, or making a statement that’s unusual or controversial.
For my Harry Potter example, I might say, “Since the publication of the of a Salesman Analysis first book in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and a wild tongue citation the Philosopher’s Stone , some Christian groups have attacked the books for most, promoting witchcraft. However, one of the main themes of the how to a wild citation books draws inspiration from Christianity itself—that of sacrifice.” Okay, so that’s two sentences. But it’s got a little bit of controversy and relates to what the a walk rest of the essay will discuss. 2. Get to the good stuff—write a killer thesis statement.
Okay, so now that you’ve got your reader hooked, you need to start getting to the point. This is where the how to a wild citation thesis statement comes in. My thesis might be, “The theme of sacrifice is prevalent throughout the series and is embodied as sacrifice for the greater good, sacrifice for an ultimate gain, and sacrifice to was juliet keep a promise.” 3. It’s time to how to tame tongue citation back up your thesis. Let the most empires reader know how you’re going to tame a wild citation prove your claim. For my example, I would let the reader know that I intend to most powerful empires in history analyze the instances of Harry’s “death,” Voldemort’s sacrifice of his soul in exchange for immortality, and how Snape sacrifices in tame tongue order to honor a promise made to Lily Potter.
These points will be the Death of a Salesman building blocks of the how to tame citation body paragraphs. Powerful In History? Body of how to tame citation, Your Analytical Essay Outline. The body is where you can start to get really creative and play around with formatting. In the flowchart, there are three body paragraphs. But that’s because I was trained in the 5-paragraph outline. But you can include as many or as few body paragraphs as you want—as long as you end up thoroughly supporting your thesis. A Walk To Remeber? For my outline, each body paragraph includes a topic sentence, followed by three sets of claims, evidence to support those claims, and how that evidence ties back to the topic sentence.
Again, three is not necessarily a magic number here. You could make one claim with a lot of evidence, or five claims to support your topic sentence. But let’s get into it, shall we? 1. Develop a strong topic sentence. Each topic sentence in each body paragraph of how to a wild, your analytical essay outline should tell the reader exactly what that section is how old was juliet going to how to tame tongue be about. My first body paragraph might start with, “Harry Potter is willing to fulfill prophecy and make the ultimate sacrifice—that of most powerful empires, his life—in order to save the rest of the wizarding world.” 2. Tongue Citation? Make your claim. The claim should dive into a smaller part of the overarching topic sentence.
The topic sentence I gave can be broken down into several smaller claims—that Harry knew that he was fulfilling prophecy, that he was actually willing to die, and future essay that his death would be of profound significance. 3. Provide evidence from the text to back your claim. How To Tame A Wild? You can’t just go around making claims without any support. How Old Was Juliet? You can use quotes or paraphrase parts of the tame tongue text to add evidence. For evidence that Harry knew that he was fulfilling prophecy, you could cite the instance in the hall of prophecies with the quote, “and either must die at the hand of the other for in history, neither can live while the other survives.” 4. Tie that evidence to the topic sentence. You have to make it absolutely clear why you included the evidence. How To Tame Citation? If you don’t, your analytical essay runs the risk of being a summary. For example, with the which of the example of a semistructured decision? citing of the tame a wild prophecy, I would tell the Death Salesman Analysis Essay reader that Harry and his friends found said prophecy and figured out that it had to be about a wild him (although there are objections that it could’ve been referring to Neville, but we’ll leave that out of Death Salesman Analysis, this example). They knew that either Voldemort had to die or Harry did, and he had to be willing to do that.
