Commiserating in the bar after the race, the engineer says, I don't understand why I lost all my money. I measured all the horses and calculated their strength and mechanical advantage and figured out how fast they could run.

The physicist interrupted him: . but you didn't take individual variations into account. I did a statistical analysis of their previous performances and bet on the horses with the highest probability of winning. Of View Poem! . Reasons! so if you're so hot why are you broke? asked the points of view poem engineer. But before the argument can grow, the mathematician takes out his pipe and they get a glimpse of his well-fattened wallet. Obviously here was a man who knows something about horses. They both demanded to know his secret. Well, he says, first I assumed all the horses were identical and spherical.

An engineer, a physicist and a mathematician are staying in a hotel. The engineer wakes up and smells smoke. He goes out into the hallway and sees a fire, so he fills a trash can from frank of everything, his room with water and douses the fire. Of View! He goes back to bed. Later, the physicist wakes up and smells smoke. He opens his door and The Patterns in Hero's, sees a fire in points of view poem the hallway. Anne Of Everything! He walks down the hall to of view, a fire hose and after calculating the flame velocity, distance, water pressure, trajectory, etc. extinguishes the fire with the minimum amount of water and energy needed.

Later, the mathematician wakes up and smells smoke. He goes to the hall, sees the the canterbury questions fire and then the fire hose. He thinks for a moment and then exclaims, Ah, a solution exists! and then goes back to bed. A physicist and a mathematician are sitting in a faculty lounge. Suddenly, the points coffee machine catches on fire. The physicist grabs a bucket and leap towards the sink, filled the bucket with water and puts out the reasons for american fire. Second day, the same two sit in the same lounge. Again, the coffee machine catches on points of view fire. Tales! This time, the mathematician stands up, got a bucket, hands the bucket to the physicist, thus reducing the problem to a previously solved one. Another version: A mathematician and an engineer are on desert island.

They find two palm trees with one coconut each. The engineer climbs up one tree, gets the coconut, eats. The mathematician climbs up the other tree, gets the points coconut, climbs the other tree and puts it there. Heaney! Now we've reduced it to a problem we know how to solve. A biologist, a physicist and a mathematician were sitting in a street cafe watching the crowd. Across the street they saw a man and a woman entering a building. Ten minutes they reappeared together with a third person.

- They have multiplied, said the biologist. - Oh no, an error in points of view poem measurement, the physicist sighed. - If exactly one person enters the reasons building now, it will be empty again, the mathematician concluded. Several scientists were all posed the points poem following question: What is 2 * 2 ? The engineer whips out his slide rule (so it's old) and reasons revolution, shuffles it back and of view poem, forth, and finally announces 3.99. The physicist consults his technical references, sets up the for american problem on his computer, and announces it lies between 3.98 and 4.02. The mathematician cogitates for a while, then announces: I don't know what the answer is, but I can tell you, an answer exists!. Philosopher smiles: But what do you mean by 2 * 2 ? Logician replies: Please define 2 * 2 more precisely. The sociologist: I don't know, but is was nice talking about points of view, it. Behavioral Ecologist: A polygamous mating system.

Medical Student : 4 All others looking astonished : How did you know ?? Medical Student : :I memorized it. A physicist, a mathematician, and heaney analysis, a mystic were asked to name the greatest invention of all time. The physicist chose the fire, which gave humanity the of view power over matter. The mathematician chose the in Hero's alphabet, which gave humanity power over symbols. The mystic chose the thermos bottle. Why a thermos bottle? the others asked.

Because the thermos keeps hot liquids hot in winter and cold liquids cold in summer. Think about it. said the mystic reverently. Of View! That little bottle -- how does it *know*? At least this time we are together with the reasons for american revolution physicist! : An chemist, a physicist, and a mathematician are stranded on an island when a can of food rolls ashore. The chemist and the physicist comes up with many ingenious ways to open the can.

Then suddenly the mathematician gets a bright idea: Assume we have a can opener . A mathematician is asked to design a table. He first designs a table with no legs. Then he designs a table with infinitely many legs. Of View Poem! He spend the the canterbury tales rest of his life generalizing the points of view results for the table with N legs (where N is frank quotes not necessarily a natural number). Several scientists were all posed the points following question: What is pi ? The engineer said: It is approximately 3 and 1/7 The physicist said: It is 3.14159 The mathematician thought a bit, and replied It is equal to reasons for american revolution, pi.

(A nutritionist: Pie is a healthy and delicious dessert! ) An engineer, a physicist and a mathematician were asked to hammer a nail into a wall. The engineer went to build a Universal Automatic Nailer -- a device able to hammer every possible nail into points of view poem, every possible wall. The physicist conducted series of experiments on strength of hammers, nails, and walls and developed a revolutionary technology of ultra-sonic nail hammering at super-low temperature. The mathematician generalized the problem to a N dimensional problem of penetration of a knotted one dimensional nail into a N-1 dimensional hyper-wall. Several fundamental theorems are proved. Of course, the problem is too rich to anne, suggest a possibility of points a simple solution, even the existence of a solution is far from obvious. A mathematician, a physicist, and seamus heaney, an engineer were traveling through Scotland when they saw a black sheep through the points window of the the follower analysis train.

Aha, says the engineer, I see that Scottish sheep are black. Hmm, says the physicist, You mean that some Scottish sheep are black. No, says the mathematician, All we know is points of view poem that there is at least one sheep in Scotland, and that at least one side of that one sheep is black! A mathematician, scientist, and engineer are each asked: Suppose we define a horse's tail to be a leg. How many legs does a horse have? The mathematician answers 5; the in the scientist 1; and the engineer says But you can't do that! A mathematician, a physicist, and an engineer are all given identical rubber balls and told to find the volume.

They are given anything they want to measure it, and have all the time they need. The mathematician pulls out a measuring tape and points of view, records the circumference. He then divides by shmoop crucible two times pi to get the radius, cubes that, multiplies by pi again, and then multiplies by four-thirds and thereby calculates the volume. The physicist gets a bucket of of view water, places 1.00000 gallons of water in the bucket, drops in and Film the ball, and measures the of view displacement to six significant figures. And the engineer? He writes down the serial number of the ball, and looks it up. A Mathematician (M) and an Engineer (E) attend a lecture by a Physicist. The topic concerns Kulza-Klein theories involving physical processes that occur in spaces with dimensions of 9, 12 and even higher. The M is sitting, clearly enjoying the lecture, while the E is frowning and looking generally confused and puzzled. By the end the anne frank quotes in spite of everything E has a terrible headache.

At the of view end, the M comments about the analysis wonderful lecture. E: How do you understand this stuff? M: I just visualize the process E: How can you POSSIBLY visualize something that occurs in 9-dimensional space? M: Easy, first visualize it in N-dimensional space, then let N go to 9 A team of engineers were required to measure the height of a flag pole. They only had a measuring tape, and of view poem, were getting quite frustrated trying to keep the quotes in spite tape along the of view pole. It kept falling down, etc.

A mathematician comes along, finds out their problem, and proceeds to remove the pole from the ground and measure it easily. When he leaves, one engineer says to the other: Just like a mathematician! We need to in Literature, know the height, and he gives us the points of view poem length! A mathematician and a physicist agree to perception in the workplace, a psychological experiment. The (hungry) mathematician is put in points of view a chair in a large empty room and his favorite meal, perfectly prepared, is placed at the other end of the room.

The psychologist explains, You are to remain in your chair. Every minute, I will move your chair to a position halfway between its current location and the meal. The mathematician looks at the psychologist in disgust. What? I'm not going to go through this.

You know I'll never reach the food! And he gets up and storms out. The psychologist ushers the physicist in. Quotes! He explains the situation, and the physicist's eyes light up and he starts drooling. The psychologist is a bit confused. Don't you realize that you'll never reach the food? T he physicist smiles and replies: Of course! But I'll get close enough for all practical purposes! One day a farmer called up an poem, engineer, a physicist, and a mathematician and asked them to fence of the largest possible area with the in spite least amount of fence. The engineer made the fence in points of view a circle and the follower seamus heaney, proclaimed that he had the most efficient design.

The physicist made a long, straight line and poem, proclaimed We can assume the perception length is infinite. and pointed out that fencing off half of the Earth was certainly a more efficient way to do it. The Mathematician just laughed at them. Points Of View! He built a tiny fence around himself and perception in the workplace, said I declare myself to be on the outside. The physicist and points of view, the engineer are in reasons revolution a hot-air balloon. Points Of View Poem! Soon, they find themselves lost in a canyon somewhere. They yell out for help: Helllloooooo! Where are we? 15 minutes later, they hear an Journeys and Film, echoing voice: Helllloooooo! You're in a hot-air balloon!! The physicist says, That must have been a mathematician. The engineer asks, Why do you say that?

The physicist replied: The answer was absolutely correct, and it was utterly useless. Several scientists were asked to prove that all odd integers higher than 2 are prime. Mathematician: 3 is a prime, 5 is a prime, 7 is a prime, and by induction - every odd integer higher than 2 is points poem a prime. Physicist: 3 is a prime, 5 is revolution a prime, 7 is a prime, 9 is an experimental error, 11 is a prime. Points Of View! Just to be sure, try several randomly chosen numbers: 17 is a prime, 23 is a prime. Engineer: 3 is a prime, 5 is a prime, 7 is a prime, 9 is an approximation to a prime, 11 is a prime. Programmer (reading the output on the screen): 3 is a prime, 3 is the follower heaney a prime, 3 a is prime, 3 is points poem a prime. Biologist: 3 is seamus heaney a prime, 5 is a prime, 7 is a prime, 9 -- results have not arrived yet. Psychologist: 3 is a prime, 5 is a prime, 7 is a prime, 9 is a prime but tries to suppress it.

Chemist (or Dan Quayle): What's a prime? Politician: Some numbers are prime.. but the goal is to create a kinder, gentler society where all numbers are prime. Programmer: Wait a minute, I think I have an algorithm from points of view poem, Knuth on finding prime numbers. just a little bit longer, I've found the last bug. no, that's not it. ya know, I think there may be a compiler bug here - oh, did you want IEEE-998.0334 rounding or not? - was that in the spec? - hold on, I've almost got it - I was up all night working on Journeys in Literature Essay this program, ya know. now if management would just get me that new workstation that just came out, I'd be done by now. etc., etc. . Points Poem! (Two is the anne frank quotes oddest prime of points all, because it's the only one that's even!) Dean, to the physics department. Why do I always have to give you guys so much money, for laboratories and expensive equipment and stuff. Why couldn't you be like the math. department - all they need is money for pencils, paper and waste-paper baskets. Or even better, like the philosophy department. All they need are pencils and paper.

A mathematician, an anne quotes, engineer, and a chemist were walking down the road when they saw a pile of cans of beer. Unfortunately, they were the old-fashioned cans that do not have the points of view poem tab at the top. One of them proposed that they split up and find can openers. The chemist went to his lab and concocted a magical chemical that dissolves the can top in an instant and evaporates the next instant so that the seamus heaney beer inside is not affected. The engineer went to points of view, his workshop and created a new HyperOpener that can open 25 cans per second. They went back to the pile with their inventions and found the mathematician finishing the last can of beer. In The Workplace! How did you manage that? they asked in astonishment. The mathematician answered, Oh, well, I assumed they were open and went from there.

An engineer, a physicist and points of view, a mathematician find themselves in an anecdote, indeed an anecdote quite similar to many that you have no doubt already heard. After some observations and rough calculations the engineer realizes the situation and starts laughing. Shmoop Crucible! A few minutes later the physicist understands too and chuckles to himself happily as he now has enough experimental evidence to publish a paper. This leaves the mathematician somewhat perplexed, as he had observed right away that he was the subject of an points, anecdote, and deduced quite rapidly the presence of humor from similar anecdotes, but considers this anecdote to shmoop crucible, be too trivial a corollary to be significant, let alone funny. New York (CNN). At John F. Kennedy International Airport today, a high school mathematics teacher was arrested trying to board a flight while in possession of a compass, a protractor and a graphical calculator. According to law enforcement officials, he is believed to have ties to the Al-Gebra network. He will be charged with carrying weapons of points of view poem math instruction. It was later discovered that he taught the students to solve their problem with the help of radicals! A mathematician organizes a lottery in which the prize is an infinite amount of money. When the winning ticket is reasons drawn, and the jubilant winner comes to claim his prize, the mathematician explains the mode of of view payment: 1 dollar now, 1/2 dollar next week, 1/3 dollar the week after that.

A Mathematician was put in a room. The room contains a table and three metal spheres about the size of a softball. He was told to do whatever he wants with the The Patterns in Hero's Journeys and Film balls and the table in one hour. After an hour, the points balls are arranges in a triangle at the center of the table. The same test is given to a Physicist. After an seamus heaney, hour, the balls are stacked one on top of the points poem other in the center of the for american table. Finally, an Engineer was tested. After an hour, one of the balls is broken, one is poem missing, and perception in the, he's carrying the third out in points his lunchbox.

A mathematician decides he wants to learn more about practical problems. He sees a seminar with a nice title: The Theory of Gears. So he goes. The speaker stands up and begins, The theory of gears with a real number of teeth is well known . Journeys In Literature! When a statistician passes the of view airport security check, they discover a bomb in his bag. He explains. Statistics shows that the probability of a bomb being on an airplane is 1/1000. However, the The Patterns Journeys in Literature and Film Essay chance that there are two bombs at points of view poem, one plane is 1/1000000. So, I am much safer. What is the difference between a Psychotic, a Neurotic and a mathematician? A Psychotic believes that 2+2=5. A Neurotic knows that 2+2=4, but it kills him.

A mathematician simply changes the base. Q: What will a logician choose: a half of an egg or eternal bliss in the afterlife? A: A half of an egg! Because nothing is better than eternal bliss in the afterlife, and a half of an egg is better than nothing. A physicist has been conducting experiments and has worked out a set of equations which seem to explain his data. He asks a mathematician to anne quotes, check them.

A week later, the mathematician calls I'm sorry, but your equations are complete nonsense. But these equations accurately predict results of of view experiments. Are you sure they are completely wrong? To be precise, they are not always a complete nonsense. But the only case in the follower seamus heaney analysis which they are true is the of view trivial one where the the canterbury field is poem Archimedean. A mathematician belives nothing until it is proven. A physicist believes everything until it is the follower seamus proven wrong. A chemist doesn't care.

biologist doesn't understand the question. An engineer and a topologist were locked in the rooms for points of view, a day with a can of food but without an opener. At the end of the day, the reasons for american revolution engineer is sitting on the floor of his room and eating from the open can: He threw it against the walls until it cracked open. In the mathematician's room, the can is still closed but the mathematician has disappeared. There are strange noises coming from inside the points poem can. When it is opened and the mathematician crawls out. Damn! I got a sign wrong. A mathematician has spent ten years trying to prove the Riemann hypothesis.

Finally, he decides to for american, sell his soul to the devil in exchange for a proof. The devil promises to poem, deliver a proof in the four weeks. Shmoop Crucible! Half a year later, the devil shows up again - in a rather gloomy mood. I'm sorry, he says. I couldn't prove the hypothesis either. But - and his face lightens up - I think I found a really interesting lemma. To mathematicians, solutions mean finding the answers. But to chemists, solutions are things that are still all mixed up.

These sketches demonstrate how desperately we want to push the math into the public education, and the struggle and passion of points of view math. students. The Evolution of Math Teaching 1960s: A peasant sells a bag of potatoes for $10. His costs amount to 4/5 of in Hero's and Film Essay his selling price. What is his profit? 1970s: A farmer sells a bag of potatoes for $10.

His costs amount to 4/5 of his selling price, that is, $8. What is his profit? 1970s (new math): A farmer exchanges a set P of potatoes with set M of money. The cardinality of the set M is equal to points of view poem, 10, and The Patterns Journeys in Literature, each element of M is worth $1. Draw ten big dots representing the of view poem elements of shmoop crucible M. The set C of production costs is composed of two big dots less than the poem set M. Represent C as a subset of M and give the answer to the question: What is the anne quotes in spite of everything cardinality of the set of profits? 1980s: A farmer sells a bag of potatoes for $10.

The first one says to the second that the of view poem average person knows very little about basic mathematics. The second one disagrees, and claims that most people can cope with a reasonable amount of shmoop crucible math. The first mathematician goes off to the washroom, and in his absence the second calls over the waitress.

He tells her that in a few minutes, after his friend has returned, he will call her over and ask her a question. All she has to do is answer one third x cubed. She repeats one thir -- dex cue? He repeats one third x cubed. Her: `one thir dex cuebd'? Yes, that's right, he says. So she agrees, and goes off mumbling to points, herself, one thir dex cuebd. . The first guy returns and the second proposes a bet to prove his point, that most people do know something about seamus, basic math. He says he will ask the blonde waitress an integral, and points, the first laughingly agrees. The second man calls over the waitress and asks what is the integral of x squared?.

The waitress says one third x cubed and of everything, while walking away, turns back and poem, says over her shoulder plus a constant! A mathematician, native Texan, once was asked in his class: What is mathematics good for? He replied: This question makes me sick. Like when you show somebody the Grand Canyon for the first time, and he asks you `What's is good for?' What would you do? Why, you would kick the quotes of everything guy off the cliff. A somewhat advanced society has figured how to package basic knowledge in pill form. A student, needing some learning, goes to of view, the pharmacy and shmoop crucible, asks what kind of knowledge pills are available. The pharmacist says Here's a pill for English literature. The student takes the pill and swallows it and points poem, has new knowledge about English literature! What else do you have? asks the The Patterns student.

Well, I have pills for points of view poem, art history, biology, and world history, replies the pharmacist. The student asks for these, and swallows them and has new knowledge about those subjects. Then the student asks, Do you have a pill for math? The pharmacist says Wait just a moment, and goes back into reasons for american, the storeroom and brings back a whopper of a pill and plunks it on the counter. I have to take that huge pill for math? inquires the student. The pharmacist replied Well, you know math always was a little hard to swallow. LET'S TALK THROUGH IT: I don't want to write it on the board lest I make a mistake. PROCEED FORMALLY: Manipulate symbols by the rules without any hint of poem their true meaning (popular in pure math courses). QUANTIFY: I can't find anything wrong with your proof except that it won't work if x is a moon of Jupiter (Popular in seamus applied math courses). PROOF OMITTED: Trust me, It's true.

Traditional - contemporary math dictionary. Professional secrets. Points! The highest moments in the life of a mathematician are the first few moments after one has proved the result, but before one finds the mistake. Golden rule of deriving: never trust any result that was proved after 11 PM. The professional quality of a mathematician is inversely proportional to the importance it attaches to space and equipment. Relations between pure and the canterbury questions, applied mathematicians are based on trust and understanding. Namely, pure mathematicians do not trust applied mathematicians, and applied mathematicians do not understand pure mathematicians. How dare of you to think that I am an analyst! Some mathematicians become so tense these days that they that they do not go to sleep during seminars. If I have seen farther than others, it is because I was standing on the shoulders of giants.

In the sciences, we are now uniquely privileged to of view, sit side by side with the giants on whose shoulders we stand. If I have not seen as far as others, it is because giants were standing on my shoulders. Mathematicians stand on the follower analysis each other's shoulders. Mathematicians stand on points of view poem each other's shoulders while computer scientists stand on each other's toes. It has been said that physicists stand on one another's shoulders. If this is the case, then programmers stand on one another's toes, and software engineers dig each other's graves. These days, even the most pure and perception, abstract mathematics is in danger to be applied. The reason that every major university maintains a department of mathematics is that it is points of view cheaper to do this than to institutionalize all those people. Here, the powerful mathematical methods are successively applied to the real life problems.

All positive integers are interesting. Assume the contrary. Then there is a lowest non-interesting positive integer. But, hey, that's pretty interesting! A contradiction. All positive integers are boring.

Assume the contrary. Then there is a lowest non-boring positive integer. Who cares! Mathematicians have announced the shmoop crucible existence of a new whole number which lies between 27 and 28. We don't know why it's there or what it does, says Cambridge mathematician, Dr.

Hilliard Haliard, we only know that it doesn't behave properly when put into equations, and that it is divisible by points of view six, though only once. There are two groups of people in the world; those who believe that the world can be divided into two groups of people, and those who don't. Theorem: The world is divided into two classes: people who say The world is divided into two classes, and people who say: The world is in Hero's and Film divided into two classes: people who say: The world is divided into two classes, and people who say: The world is divided into two classes: people who say . There are three kinds of people in points of view the world; those who can count and anne frank in spite, those who can't. There are 10 kinds of people in of view the world, those who understand binary math, and those who don't. There really are only two types of people in shmoop crucible the world, those that DON'T. DO MATH, and those that take care of them. The world is of view everywhere dense with idiots. A cat has nine tails.

No cat has eight tails. A cat has one tail more than no cat. Therefore, a cat has nine tails. The less you know, the more you make. Proof: Postulate 1: Knowledge is Power . Postulate 2: Time is Money . As every engineer knows: Power = Work / Time. And since Knowledge = Power and perception workplace, Time = Money. It is therefore true that Knowledge = Work / Money . Solving for Money , we get:

Money = Work / Knowledge. Thus, as Knowledge approaches zero, Money approaches infinity, regardless of the amount of Work done. Q: How do you tell that you are in the hands of the Mathematical Mafia? A: They make you an offer that you can't understand. The cherry theorem (a puzzle that reminds some of calculus theorems) Q: What is a small, red, round thing that has a cherry pit inside? Notes on the horse colors problem. Lemma 1. All horses are the points of view same color. (Proof by induction) Proof.

It is obvious that one horse is the same color. Let us assume the proposition P(k) that k horses are the for american same color and points of view poem, use this to seamus, imply that k+1 horses are the poem same color. Given the set of k+1 horses, we remove one horse; then the remaining k horses are the same color, by hypothesis. We remove another horse and replace the the follower heaney first; the k horses, by hypothesis, are again the same color. Points Of View Poem! We repeat this until by exhaustion the reasons for american k+1 sets of k horses have been shown to be the same color. It follows that since every horse is the same color as every other horse, P(k) entails P(k+1) . But since we have shown P(1) to be true, P is true for all succeeding values of k , that is, all horses are the same color. Theorem 1. Every horse has an infinite number of legs. Points Poem! (Proof by intimidation.) Proof. Horses have an even number of of everything legs.

Behind they have two legs and in front they have fore legs. This makes six legs, which is certainly an odd number of legs for a horse. But the only number that is both odd and even is infinity. Therefore horses have an infinite number of legs. Now to show that this is general, suppose that somewhere there is a horse with a finite number of of view legs. But that is a horse of another color, and by reasons the lemma that does not exist. Corollary 1. Everything is the same color. Proof. Points Of View Poem! The proof of lemma 1 does not depend at The Patterns in Hero's in Literature and Film, all on the nature of the object under consideration.

The predicate of the antecedent of the points of view universally-quantified conditional 'For all x , if x is a horse, then x is the same color,' namely 'is a horse' may be generalized to 'is anything' without affecting the validity of the in Hero's and Film Essay proof; hence, 'for all x , if x is anything, x is the same color.' Corollary 2. Everything is white. Proof. If a sentential formula in of view x is logically true, then any particular substitution instance of it is a true sentence. In particular then: 'for all x , if x is an elephant, then x is the same color' is true. Now it is manifestly axiomatic that white elephants exist (for proof by the canterbury questions and answers blatant assertion consult Mark Twain 'The Stolen White Elephant'). Therefore all elephants are white. Points Of View Poem! By corollary 1 everything is white.

Theorem 2. Alexander the Great did not exist and he had an infinite number of limbs. Proof. We prove this theorem in two parts. First we note the obvious fact that historians always tell the truth (for historians always take a stand, and therefore they cannot lie). Hence we have the historically true sentence, 'If Alexander the Great existed, then he rode a black horse Bucephalus.' But we know by corollary 2 everything is white; hence Alexander could not have ridden a black horse. Since the consequent of the conditional is false, in Journeys in Literature and Film Essay order for the whole statement to be true the points poem antecedent must be false. Hence Alexander the Great did not exist. We have also the historically true statement that Alexander was warned by an oracle that he would meet death if he crossed a certain river. He had two legs; and 'forewarned is four-armed.' This gives him six limbs, an even number, which is certainly an odd number of limbs for a man.

Now the only number which is even and the canterbury questions, odd is of view poem infinity; hence Alexander had an infinite number of in the workplace limbs. We have thus proved that Alexander the Great did not exist and that he had an infinite number of limbs. According to statistics, there are 42 million alligator eggs laid every year. Of those, only about half get hatched. Of those that hatch, three fourths of them get eaten by of view poem predators in the first 36 days. Perception In The! And of the rest, only 5 percent get to be a year old for points of view, one reason or another. Isn't statistics wonderful? If it weren't for statistics, we'd be eaten by reasons alligators! Let's play with math objects! An insane mathematician gets on points poem a bus and starts threatening everybody: I'll integrate you!

I'll differentiate you. Perception In The Workplace! Everybody gets scared and points of view, runs away. Only one lady stays. In Spite! The guy comes up to points, her and says: Aren't you scared, I'll integrate you, I'll differentiate you. The lady calmly answers: No, I am not scared, I am e^x . More advanced and more New York style story: A constant function and e^x are walking on Broadway. Then suddenly the shmoop crucible constant function sees a differential operator approaching and runs away. So e^x follows him and asks why the hurry. Poem! Well, you see, there's this differential operator coming this way, and when we meet, he'll differentiate me and nothing will be left of me. Ah, says e^x , he won't bother ME, I'm e to perception, the x ! and he walks on.

Of course he meets the differential operator after a short distance. The number you have dialed is points of view imaginary. Please rotate your phone 90 degrees and try again. The shortest math joke: let epsilon be 0. (For native LaTex speakers: $$lim_ 3^2 = 16$$) 1 + 1 =3 , for sufficiently large one's. The combination of the Einstein and Pythagoras discoveries: The limit as n goes to infinity of sin (x) /n is 6 . Proof: cancel the n in the numerator and denominator.

As x goes to shmoop crucible, zero, the points of view limit of 8 /x is 00 (infinity), then the frank in spite of everything limit (as x goes to zero) of Z /x is N. But twelve isn't odd! Twelve is an odd number of anne quotes of everything cubes to put in points of view a cup of coffee. A statistician can have his head in an oven and his feet in ice, and he will say that on the average he feels fine. Q: Did you hear the one about the statistician? The light bulb problem.

Q: How many mathematicians does it take to screw in a light bulb? A1: None. It's left to the reader as an exercise. A2: None. A mathematician can't screw in shmoop crucible a light bulb, but he can easily prove the work can be done. A3: One. He gives it to four programmers, thereby reducing the problem to the already solved (ask a programmer, how) A4: The answer is intuitively obvious. A5: Just one, once you've managed to present the problem in terms he/she is familiar with. A6: In earlier work, Wiener [1] has shown that one mathematician can change a light bulb.

If k mathematicians can change a light bulb, and if one more simply watches them do it, then k+1 mathematicians will have changed the light bulb. Therefore, by induction, for points of view, all n in the positive integers, n mathematicians can change a light bulb. [1] Weiner, Matthew P. Changing a lightbulb is a special case of a more general theorem concerning the maintain and points of view, repair of an revolution, electrical system. To establish upper and lower bounds for points poem, the number of reasons personnel required, we must determine whether the sufficient conditions of Lemma 2.1 (Availability of personnel) and those of Corollary 2.3.55 (Motivation of of view poem personnel) apply.

Iff these conditions are met, we derive the result by frank quotes in spite an application of the theorems in Section 3.1123. The resulting upper bound is, of course, a result in an abstract measure space, in the weak-* topology. How many professors does it take to replace a lightbulb?? Two trains 200 miles apart are moving toward each other; each one is going at a speed of 50 miles per hour. A fly starting on the front of anne in spite of everything one of points poem them flies back and forth between them at a rate of 75 miles per hour. It does this until the trains collide and crush the shmoop crucible fly to death. What is the total distance the fly has flown? The fly actually hits each train an points, infinite number of times before it gets crushed, and one could solve the problem the hard way with pencil and paper by summing an infinite series of distances. The easy way is as follows: Since the trains are 200 miles apart and The Patterns in Hero's Journeys in Literature and Film Essay, each train is going 50 miles an hour, it takes 2 hours for the trains to poem, collide. Therefore the fly was flying for two hours. Perception! Since the fly was flying at a rate of poem 75 miles per for american hour, the fly must have flown 150 miles. That's all there is to it. When this problem was posed to John von Neumann, he immediately replied, 150 miles. It is very strange, said the poser, but nearly everyone tries to sum the infinite series.

What do you mean, strange? asked Von Neumann. That's how I did it! Another von Neumann quote : Young man, in mathematics you don't understand things, you just get used to them. Ernst Eduard Kummer (1810-1893), a German algebraist, was sometimes slow at calculations.. Whenever he had occasion to the follower heaney analysis, do simple arithmetic in points of view class, he would get his students to help him. Once he had to find 7 x 9. Seven times nine, he began, Seven times nine is er -- ah --- ah -- seven times nine is. . . . Sixty-one, a student suggested. Kummer wrote 61 on the board. Sir, said another student, it should be sixty-nine. Come, come, gentlemen, it can't be both, Kummer exclaimed. It must be one or the other.

This anecdote is attributed to Landau (the Russian physicist Lev not the Göttingen mathematician Edmund). Landau's group was discussing a bright new theory, and one of junior colleagues of Landau bragged that he had independently discovered the theory a couple of the follower seamus heaney years ago, but did not bother to of view, publish his finding. I would not repeat this claim if I were you, Landau replied: There is nothing wrong if one has not found. a solution to a particular problem. The History of African Village Chickens: an Archaeological and Molecular Perspective. The history of the of view poem, introduction and dispersal of village chickens across the African continent is a subject of intense debate and speculation among scholars. Here, we synthesize and The Patterns Journeys and Film, summarise the current scientific genetic and nongenetic knowledge in relation to the history of the species on points of view, the continent. Sociocultural, linguistic, archaeological and historic data all suggest a complex history for the species in Africa, characterized by multiple maritime and/or terrestrial introductions over time and several dispersal routes towards and within Africa. The Canterbury Questions! Molecular genetics information supports these observations and in addition suggests possible Asian centers of points poem, origin for African domestic chickens, including South Asia and the canterbury questions, Island Southeast Asia. However, both sets of data were until now too limited in their geographic scope, both within Africa and in points of view poem comparison with chickens from Asia, to shmoop crucible unravel the history of the of view poem, species in detail. Frank Quotes In Spite Of Everything! We anticipate that further continent-wide studies combining archaeological, ancient and/or modern genetic information may shed new insights on of view poem, the history of the The Patterns Journeys, species. Domestic chickens are closely associated with humans, and they rely entirely upon humans for their dispersal and indirectly for their survival. The species are therefore important biological markers of agricultural, trade and cultural contacts between societies and civilizations. They are present across the African continent where free-range, scavenging village chickens are found in the follower seamus analysis all agroecological zones, ranging from villages in the humid and points poem, subhumid tropical rain forests of West and reasons for american, Central Africa to the temperate highlands of East Africa and the arid and semi-arid regions of the Sahel and Kalahari deserts ( ; DAGRIS 2007 ). Points! With an estimated total population of 1.6 billion at the end of shmoop crucible, 2010 (FAOSTAT 2012 ), they are the most abundant livestock species in poem Africa, contributing to a significant part of the continent's agricultural economy.

Although the African continent is shmoop crucible rich in galliform species, the recognized main wild ancestor of domestic chickens, the red junglefowl Gallus gallus , is endemic to sub-Himalayan northern India, southern China and Southeast Asia (Delacour 1977 ), where the putative centers of domestication of the species are present (Tixier-Boichard et al . 2011 ). Therefore, domestic chickens, though abundant on the continent, are an introduced species from of view poem Asia. Whether or not the species was domesticated in a single geographic area in Southeast Asia (Fumihito et al . 1994 , 1996 ) or across the geographic range of the wild ancestor in both South and Southeast Asia (Liu et al . 2006 , Kanginakudru et al . The Follower! 2008 ) is still disputed today. Opinions among scholars are divided concerning when the species arrived and points of view, the routes by which chickens entered and dispersed across the continent (Gifford-Gonzalez and Hanotte 2011 ). Shmoop Crucible! Archaeological data are patchy (Fuller et al . 2011 ) while molecular genetic information is just starting to emerge (Gifford-Gonzalez and points, Hanotte 2011 ). In this paper, we review the the canterbury tales questions, information available today (sociocultural, linguistic, archaeological and molecular genetic) on the arrival and of view, movement of chickens across the African continent, providing a proxy for shmoop crucible, our understanding of ancient and modern human interactions and migrations, including trading routes within Africa and between the African continent and civilizations across Asia. The initial trigger for the adoption of domestic chickens by African communities could have been sociocultural and/or recreational ( e . g ., cockfighting) rather than as a new source of points of view, food. The Patterns! Textual records indicate that chickens were already present in Egypt by the time of the of view poem, Third Dynasty of Ur ( c. The Follower Seamus! 2,1132,006 BC), and of view poem, the oldest recognizable occurrence of the bird in art dates from the reasons for american, second half of the fourteenth century BC (Haller 1954 ; Smith 1965 ). Houlihan and Goodman ( 1986 ) suggest, however, that the first evidence for its consumption comes from the tomb of Petosiris, which dates to the fourth century BC, though this suggestion has been challenged by MacDonald and Edwards ( 1993 ). Houlihan and Goodman ( 1986 ) further suggest that chickens were probably brought to Egypt as creatures of curiosity and admiration because of their unusualness and that they did not become a regular feature of the Egyptian farmyard until the poem, Ptolemaic period (304330 BC). Domestic chickens could have been introduced to reasons for american revolution the African continent several times, fulfilling different societal needs at different time periods. Linguistic evidence not only supports a deep embedding of points of view, chickens in African cultures and traditions, but also agrees with an early introduction and a complex history of in Hero's in Literature and Film, arrival and dispersion of the species. More particularly, Williamson ( 2000 ) suggests that different geographic distributions, and spread of the three major roots of the points, word fowl across three language phyla, represent at least three separate introductions of domestic chickens to West Africa: two across Central Africa from the East Coast of Africa and one from North Africa across the Sahara. Blench ( 2008 ) noted that the questions, origin of the common Malagasy name for chicken, akoho , cannot be assigned definitively to a Bantu or Austronesian language group. Rather, from his analysis, he concludes that all the terminologies relating to domestic animals in Madagascar appear to be derived from languages of the Swahili, with the Comoros Islands being a possible original source of chickens found in points poem Madagascar. Archaeological and Historic Evidence. Summary of archaeological dates for the presence of chicken in different regions across the African continent.

The fourth to third millennia BC have been advanced as the period for frank of everything, the first arrival of domestic chickens in Africa (Chami 2001 , 2007 ). However, these dates have been disputed as the osteological remains used in their calibration are nondiagnostic according to the recommended criteria (MacDonald 1992 ; Dueppen 2011 ). Points Of View Poem! In North Africa, domestic chickens are depicted in Egypt from the second millennium BC (Houlihan and Goodman 1986 ). Workplace! In sub-Saharan Africa, the earliest widely accepted evidence of poem, domestic chickens dates to shmoop crucible the mid-first millennium AD in Nubia and the late first millennium AD in East and South Africa ( e . g ., Horton and Mudida, 1993 ; Plug 1996a , b ). In West Africa, several sites attest to points of view poem the presence of chickens in the late first millennium AD (Table 1 ). More particularly, while in in Hero's Journeys in Literature Essay the Voltaic region evidence for chickens is scarce, researchers working at Daboya (Ghana) have suggested the presence of chickens throughout the points of view, first millennium AD (Shinnie and reasons for american revolution, Kense 1989 ). Until recently, the oldest known, securely identified remains in the western part of the continent were dated to AD 500850 from Jenne-Jeno in points poem Mali (MacDonald 1995b ). New evidence from Kirikongo (Burkina Faso) and Daboya indicates that chickens were already a significant component of the Iron Age economy in West Africa by the sixth century AD at the latest and probably several centuries earlier (Dueppen 2011 ) (Fig. 1 ). Using geographic distribution and dating of the purportedly most ancient, undisputed archaeological evidence in the form of skeletal remains ( c. Reasons For American! 1,5671,320 BC), pictorial/artistic representations ( c. 1,4251,123 BC) and literary evidence ( c. 1,5041,450 BC), a commonly held argument is that chickens may have first entered Africa overland through the North of Africa (Egypt), with subsequent dispersion southwards along the Nile valley to Nubia and then in West Africa along the points of view, Sudano-Sahelian corridor (MacDonald and Edwards 1993 ; Fuller et al . 2011 ). Coltherd ( 1966 ) argues that this introduction brought chickens from the Harappan culture of the Indus Valley civilization ( c. 2,5002,100 BC) into Egypt via Mesopotamia. In addition to shmoop crucible the Nile corridor, MacDonald and Edwards ( 1993 ) further suggest an independent diffusion of points of view poem, chickens into West Africa through the Sudano-Sahelian belt from the East African coast occurring much later, perhaps related to Indian Ocean trade networks. However, increasing evidence for shmoop crucible, greater antiquity than previously thought for the Indian Ocean trading network, based largely on the presence of points, Asian plant domesticates in Africa and of African domesticated plants in Journeys in Literature and Film Essay South and Southeast Asia, support an early possible entry point of domestic species along the points, East African coast (Fuller et al . 2011 ). These findings challenge the presumption of North African anteriority for the origin of sub-Saharan African chickens. A component of the canterbury questions, this early maritime trading network has been described in some detail in the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea from the early first century AD (Casson 1989 ; Cappers 2006 ). That work mentioned African port centres along the coast of Somalia, Tanzania or even possibly Madagascar (Casson 1989 ; Cappers 2006 ). Chami ( 1999 ) has also reported evidence confirming the great antiquity of trading networks in the Indian Ocean interaction sphere, lending support to the observations of the of view, Periplus . As summarised in shmoop crucible Blench ( 2010 ), it is likely that there were regular contacts between Island Southeast Asia and the East African coast prior to of view poem the first centuries AD, independent from the establishment of Austronesians in Madagascar around the revolution, fifth century AD (Blench 2010 ). Lastly, the inclusion of East Africa into a maritime trading network extending eastward to Southwestern China is illustrated by the visit of points of view poem, Chinese fleets under the command of Cheng Ho off the coast of anne frank of everything, East Africa, although at a much more recent date, the beginning of the points of view poem, fifteenth century AD (Duyvendak 1939 ). Undoubtedly, the complex and the canterbury tales questions, ancient interactions resulting from the Indian Ocean trading networks must have facilitated maritime and terrestrial intercontinental translocations of several domestic and nondomestic plant and animal species among Africa, the Middle East and South, Southeast and East Asia (Boivin and Fuller 2009 ; Fuller and Boivin 2009 ; Fuller et al . 2011 ). It would not be surprising that domestic chickens would have been an intrinsic part of these translocation packages in historic times and possibly much earlier than the introductions via the north of the continent. The arrival of European settlers as part of the development of the terrestrial and maritime empires of several European nations across Africa and Asia (Portugal, Britain, etc .) from the fifteenth century AD onwards provided further opportunities for the arrival and points of view poem, movement of chickens within Africa.

Also, since the reasons, second half of the twentieth century, the points of view, African continent, as other parts of the world, has witnessed the arrival of exotic chicken breeds developed for higher productivity (Kitalyi 1997 ), including for crossbreeding purposes with local flocks to improve meat and egg production. Heaney Analysis! These developments might have had an impact on the genetic make-up of some African village chicken populations. The genetic diversity and perception, relationships between chicken populations from several African countries have now been investigated using autosomal microsatellite markers (Table 2 ). Points Of View! The studies have included chicken populations from Tanzania, Nigeria and Cameroon (Wimmers et al . 2000 ); Kenya and East Africa (Sudan, Ethiopia, Uganda) (Mwacharo et al . 2007 ); Zimbabwe, Malawi and Sudan (Muchadeyi et al . 2007 ); Ethiopia (Dessie 2007 ; Hassan et al . 2009 ; Dana 2011 ; Goraga et al . 2011 ); South Africa (Mtileni et al. In The Workplace! 2010 ); Benin (Youssao et al . 2010 ); Ghana (Osei-Amponsah et al.

2010 ); Egypt (Eltanany et al. 2011 ); and points of view poem, Benin, Cote dIvoire, Ghana, Morocco and Cameroon (Leroy et al. 2012 ). Reasons For American Revolution! Although the of view poem, markers used in these studies overlap to a large extent, with the recommended set of ISAGFAO microsatellite markers (FAO 2011 ), no common samples or populations have been used across studies, and this constrains continent-wide analysis. However, a few important general findings are emerging. African indigenous chickens are closely related genetically but are clearly distinct from commercial breeds (Mwacharo et al. 2007 ; Leroy et al. 2012 ). Seamus Heaney! Their genetic diversities are roughly comparable across studies/populations and correspond to the values usually observed in points of view other free-range scavenging chicken populations worldwide, but they are much higher than those observed in for american commercial breeds ( e.g. , Wimmers et al. 2000 ; Osei-Amponsah et al. 2010 ; Leroy et al.

2012 ). This diversity may indicate a higher effective population size for introduced African village chickens compared to commercial chickens, and/or ancient population admixture following multiple introductions. Genetic divergence between chicken populations is generally weak ( e.g. , Osei-Amponsah et al. 2010 ; Youssao et al. 2010 ), and it seems to reflect geographic distances between populations (see Mwacharo et al. 2007 ). However, Goraga et al . ( 2011 ) report genetic distinctions between groups of chicken populations from Ethiopia and Mwacharo et al . ( 2007 ) genetic distinctions between Kenyan - Ugandese and Ethiopian - Sudanese populations.

Also, Leroy et al. ( 2012 ) report greater similarity of genetic structure between chicken populations living in the same major farming systems across West African countries than between farming systems within countries. These observations are compatible with a history of multiple introductions of different genetic pools of the points poem, species into the regions, chicken movement along specific trading routes, and/or long-term geographic isolation of these populations. Evidence of genetic introgression between commercial and local populations has recently been demonstrated using microsatellites for populations from Morocco and Cameroon, but not for populations from Benin, Ghana and Cote dIvoire (Leroy et al. 2012 ). Such introgression could be related to the long-term breeding improvement programmes that involve the the canterbury, supply of commercial breeds to local farmers for points poem, crossbreeding purposes. However, the impact of heaney, such introgressions is points of view limited, possibly due to heaney poor adaptation of exotic birds to village conditions and the preference of consumers for local chickens. Only a few molecular genetics studies have now been published on African chickens using maternally inherited mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) (Razafindraibe et al.

2008 ; Adebambo et al. 2010 ; Muchadeyi et al. Poem! 2008 ; Mtileni et al. 2011 ; Mwacharo et al. 2011 ) (Table 3 ). The Patterns In Hero's And Film Essay! Fortunately, these studies have all analysed a hypervariable region of the molecule, the points of view, D-loop, which allows comparison across studies. Unfortunately, there is and answers no standardized nomenclature for of view, the chicken mtDNA haplogroups identified across the anne quotes in spite of everything, African studies. Points Of View! So far, the largest study is the one by anne quotes in spite of everything Mwacharo et al. ( 2011 ). Points Of View Poem! It includes mtDNA sequences from 512 domestic chickens from four East African countries (Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan and Uganda). For the sake of comparison, we have therefore adopted the nomenclature of quotes in spite of everything, Mwacharo et al . ( 2011 ) (Table 3 ), with its equivalence in other African studies as well as in the reference broad-scale Eurasian study of Liu et al . ( 2006 ) presented in supplementary Table S 1 . While we observe on the African continent five of the nine divergent haplogroups identified across Europe and Asia by Liu et al . Points Of View! ( 2006 ), two haplogroups, A and in spite of everything, D, dominate the continent (Table 3 ). Haplogroup D clearly is found in all the African countries studied and points, is the most common in workplace all countries with the exception of Madagascar, Zimbabwe and poem, eastern Kenya. It is the only haplogroup so far identified in The Patterns and Film West Africa, represented there by Nigeria (Adebambo et al. 2010 ). Of View! The next commonest haplogroup is A, which is absent from Uganda, Sudan, Nigeria and frank quotes in spite, Ethiopia but is the commonest in of view Madagascar, Malawi, Zimbabwe and tales, eastern Kenya. The other haplogroups are observed at very low frequencies in all studies, being present in points of view poem only one or two birds.

Through a detailed analysis of the geographic distribution of haplogroup A and D across East Africa, Mwacharo et al. ( 2011 ) have provided evidence revealing that these two haplogroup likely have a different history on the continent. It has been proposed that African haplogroup A originates from shmoop crucible Southeast and/or East Asia (Muchadeyi et al. 2008 ; Mtileni et al. 2011 ; Mwacharo et al. 2011 ) and points poem, that it would have been the result of a maritime introduction along the the follower seamus, East African coastline (Mwacharo et al. 2011 ) including Madagascar (Razafindraibe et al. 2008 ). Following the known history of the of view, peopling of Madagascar, Razafindraibe et al. ( 2008 ) have suggested that its origin might be the Indonesian islands. It is therefore possible that haplogroup A would be a legacy of the Austronesian expansion in Africa. However, so far, no studies have attempted to address the relationship between African haplogroup A and the haplogroups observed in local chickens from the seamus heaney analysis, Indonesian islands. Using phylogeographic information on the modern geographic distribution across Europe and Asia (Liu et al. 2006 ), the Indian subcontinent has been proposed as the initial center of origin for the haplogroup D found in points of view Africa (Muchadeyi et al.

2008 ; Mtileni et al. 2011 ; Mwacharo et al. 2011 ). Interestingly, a possible Indian subcontinent origin of some African chickens is reasons revolution further supported by the commonly observed yellow skin phenotype across African village chickens ( e.g. , FAO 2009 ; Dana et al. 2010a ; Youssao et al. 2010 ; Daikwo et al. 2011 ; Melesse and Negesse 2011 ; El-Safty 2012 ). This phenotype has recently been shown at the molecular level to be a legacy of successful introgression of the grey junglefowl Gallus sonneratii , a yet-to-be-domesticated Gallus species with restricted geographic range on the Indian subcontinent, into domestic chicken (Eriksson et al.

2008 ). However, whether or not these crossbred chickens of points of view, Indian origin reached the African continent through a maritime and/or terrestrial route remains unknown. The possible center(s) of origin for chickens harbouring the reasons revolution, mitochondrial DNA of haplogroups B, C and E, observed so far at low frequencies on of view poem, the African continent (Table 3 ), is more speculative. Haplogroup B and C may have reached Africa following recent introductions of improved commercial chickens (Mwacharo et al. 2011 ). This suggestion is perception supported by the presence of identical or closely related haplotypes belonging to these haplogroups in European and commercial chickens (Muchadeyi et al. 2008 ; Dana et al. 2010b ). Using microsatellite markers, Leroy et al. Points Poem! ( 2012 ) also demonstrated gene flow between commercial and perception in the workplace, local chickens in some sub-Saharan African countries. However, a more ancient and direct introduction of these two haplogroups from their centers of origins in Asia also remains possible. Points Of View Poem! More data are required to further clarify the origin(s) of perception workplace, these two haplogroups on the African continent. Haplogroup E is points of view not observed in commercial chickens (Muchadeyi et al. 2008 ; Dana et al.

2010b ). Both Muchadeyi et al. ( 2008 ) and Mwacharo et al. ( 2011 ), using the study of Liu et al. ( 2006 ) as a reference, have proposed that the center of origin of haplogroup E might be South China and, more particularly, the Yunnan province and/or adjacent geographic regions such as Myanmar (Mwacharo et al. 2011 ). The routes of introduction of this haplogroup into the African continent remain unknown, but its worldwide geographic distribution today (Liu et al. 2006 ) suggests that it was likely the seamus, consequence of a maritime introduction to the African continent. It raises the interesting hypothesis that its arrival might have followed the Chinese maritime trading expeditions across the points of view, Indian Ocean (Duyvendak 1939 ; Beaujard 2005 ; Mwacharo et al. 2011 ). Sociocultural, linguistic, archaeological, historic and molecular genetic evidence are all in agreement in revealing a complex history of shmoop crucible, domestic chickens on the African continent, which may include multiple origins from the geographic range of the wild ancestor in Asia, multiple entry points and multiple routes of dispersion. Archaeological data support a relatively ancient presence of of view, this domesticate in Africa, although several thousand years more recent than the earliest evidence of anne quotes of everything, domesticated ruminants on the continent (Gifford-Gonzalez and Hanotte 2011 ). Terrestrial as well as maritime introductions likely brought chickens to Africa. However, our knowledge of the points poem, history of African village chickens is in Hero's in Literature and Film still in its infancy with several important unknowns. We still do not know when domestic chickens were first adopted by African societies and for what purposes.

We have, so far, little information on the likely number of waves that brought chickens into the continent and their time sequence. Also, the terrestrial and maritime dispersal routes of domestic chickens from their centers of poem, origin in Asia to Africa remain largely speculative. Last but not least, our knowledge of the putative entry points and movements of chickens within the African continent is in Hero's and Film Essay similarly incomplete. We believe that the answers to these questions will rely on new archaeological and genetic information generated from inside and outside the African continent, with the most promising studies combining calibrated dating of archaeological bones, ancient DNA sequence information and points poem, joint analysis of archaeological and molecular genetic diversity data across Africa, Europe and the canterbury tales, Asia. New genetic marker analysis (autosomal markers, full genome and mitochondrial DNA sequences) will undoubtedly provide further information, as has now been illustrated for other African livestock species ( e.g. , cattle; see Gifford-Gonzalez and Hanotte 2011 ). In this context, it is important to take note of the of view poem, fact that we do have at best incomplete molecular genetic information on the modern genetic diversity of indigenous chickens from the Arabian Peninsula, the reasons for american revolution, Middle and the Near East, most of the Indian subcontinent, and large geographic areas in mainland and island Southeast Asia ( e.g. Points Poem! , Laos, Cambodia, the Philippines, Indonesia). Also, within the African continent, information on the genetic diversity of perception in the, indigenous chickens is still too fragmentary to allow a comprehensive genetic analysis throughout the continent. Poem! Lastly, as reviewed in detail by others (Blench 2003 ; Boivin and Fuller 2009 ; Fuller and Boivin 2009 ; Fuller et al. 2011 ), chickens were only one of the agricultural species being voluntarily traded between Africa and Asia.

Combining different lines of information from other agricultural and nonagricultural organisms that may have travelled as companion species will likely provide new insights and hypotheses about the history of African domestic village chickens. We would like to thank Diane Gifford-Gonzalez as well as two anonymous reviewers for their valuable comments on tales questions and answers, an earlier version of this manuscript. Possible topics and areas of study may include: Changes in river velocity from source to mouth Changes in of view, load (shape and for american size) from source to mouth Changes in channel depth, width, cross-section and points of view poem wetted perimeter from for american, source to points of view poem mouth Changes in discharge from source to mouth Changes across a meanders cross section Changes in river gradient from source to mouth Changes in valley size and gradient from the canterbury tales, source to mouth Changes in land use a long a river Changes in pollution along a rivers' course (you need proper equipment for this) Changes in vegetation (cover and variety) moving inland Changes in beach profile and sand dune profile Speed of longshore drift Changes in poem, land use Changes in the follower seamus analysis, defences (compare to land use) Changes in beach or dune material (size or shape)

Changes in land use Changes in traffic (maybe CBD to rural-urban fringe) Changes in pedestrians Number and type of points poem, tourists Changes in the quality of the heaney analysis environment or pollution levels (may look at the impact of of view poem, industry) Changes in globalisation Changes in cost of quotes of everything, products Comparison to Burgess or Hoyt Model Changes in wealth or population density (will have to use some secondary data) Sphere of influences of settlements or services. Before you choose your coursework you have to decide if you live in a suitable study location. For example it is no use trying to do a piece of coursework on rivers, if you live in the middle of a desert. Of View Poem! Before starting your coursework, you should also think about how you can carry out the coursework safely and definitely carry out a risk assessment. The Canterbury Tales Questions And Answers! You can make your coursework safer by doing the following: Protection from the weather (waterproof jacket, umbrella, hat, suncream) Sensible dress (remember you will be representing your school, but you should also wear clothes that don't draw attention to points poem yourself Always carry out Journeys and Film, coursework in groups Always tell an adult or teacher where you area carrying out coursework Always carry a mobile phone with you Never do coursework near a river or the sea without an adult or teacher and without them checking that it is of view, safe Carry out perception workplace, coursework in points poem, day light and wear reflective clothes Check that your study area is safe.

For example it wouldn't be safe walking around downtown San Salvador Don't display valuables making you more vulnerable to crime e.g. if you have a camera or a phone keep it out of sight. Specification: Formulating aims and hypotheses: Candidates should be familiar with hypotheses as statements that form the The Patterns in Hero's Essay basis of Coursework assignments. Points! The hypotheses may investigate a geographical concept e.g. Shmoop Crucible! A CBD has the highest concentration of comparison shops. Collecting relevant data, analysis and drawing conclusions using the data as evidence can test these. The width of a river will increase as you move from the source to the mouth The amount of traffic will increase as you move from the rural-urban fringe to the CBD The amount of vegetation will increase as you move inland from the of view sea (distance = 200metres) The hottest part of the day will be between 1200 and 1400. Whenever you are doing data collection, the in the aim is to be as objective as possible. Points Of View! Objective means that no bias or personal opinion affects the outcome of your results.

The opposite to workplace be objective is poem, being subjective. Being subjective simple means that your own personal views and bias has influenced results. It is up to date (current) You know how the and answers data has been collected i.e. what technique It only includes data that is relevant to your coursework It only points of view, covers your study area It is in the workplace, collected in the format that you want. You can study temporal changes e.g. how population has changed over a number of years It can be quicker, especially if the data is on of view, the internet You can study a larger area It may include data that you can not obtain personally e.g. salaries. The data may include some personal bias Data collection can be time consuming It can be expensive to travel to places to collect data It is hard to study temporal changes Some data might be unavailable or too dangerous to collect Only possible to cover a small area. It is out of date, especially if it has been printed in a book. There might more information than you need The information may include a larger area than your study area You may not know how the data was collected and who collected the data The data might be in frank quotes in spite of everything, the wrong format e.g. in a graph and not raw figures. Quantitative data: This is any data that involves figures.

Quantitative data is points of view poem, very easy to present and analyse. Even though it is easy to reasons revolution present it can be very general and exclude some data. Because you are following a pattern you will get better coverage of an area or sample group. Even though you pick the points of view technique, once it is tales questions and answers, picked, there is no bias in who gets selected. It is points of view, very simple to understand and carry out.

Because you are selecting the The Patterns in Hero's Journeys in Literature Essay systematic technique, there is some bias (subjectivity). You decide how often to points of view take a sample. Even with a systematic sample you may end up with an unrepresentative sample e.g. you ask every 10th person to fill in a questionnaire, but every 10th person turns out to be female. Every person or every location/place has a completely equal chance of being selected It is quick and simple. Because it is totally random, results maybe completely random and not representative e.g. when randomly selecting names out of hat to anne of everything ask questionnaires too, you only pick females. Stratified sampling: Because both systematic and random sampling can give you a unrepresentative sample, if you have some secondary data that allows you to points rank your sample group you can then carry out stratified sampling. For example if you are carrying out environmental indexes in a city that has 12 districts, if you randomly or systematically select four, you may pick th efour best or the four worst. However, if you know the The Patterns Journeys in Literature average income of those 12 areas (census data) you can them rank them 1 to 12 and then randomly or systematically pick a district from of view, each quartile giving you a more representative sample. Decide on your questions (what do you need to tales find out and what type of question are you going to ask) Whether to points do the questions orally or give them in written form (you may have to think about translations) How you are going to pilot (test) your questions How you are going to record the answers (record them, write them down, trying to The Patterns Journeys in Literature and Film remember is unreliable) How you are going to sample (random, systematic, stratified) Remember that you are representing yourself and the school - be polite Remember people don't have to answer questions and they may be sensitive about some e.g. age groups and income groups. When actually designing your questions you have two real choice; open or closed:

You are getting the respondents personal opinion. They are not limited in their response. Some responses might not be relevant to your research Respondents may not understand the question and give you an irrelevant response Results are very hard to analyse using graphs or tables. All answers will be relevant to your research The results are easy to analyse using graphs and tables. The results lack personal opinion. Of View! They can be very generalised You are nearly always forced to in the workplace have an other box meaning you don't know what the respondent thinks Your personal opinion has been placed on the questions (subjective). Specification: Observation Examples of using observations as an enquiry skill to collect data include the recording of land-use in an urban area or observations of river or coastal features.

Maps, recording sheets, field sketches and annotated photographs may all be used to record candidate observations. It is important to always have an other category, because you always find a land use that you have not thought about. They are more accurate than field sketches They can be good for points of view, showing data collection techniques e.g. measuring a river's load They can support data collection findings e.g. they can show an example of a poor environment They can show temporal changes, especially if you can find historical photos. You can annotate and questions label them. People often include photos that are not relevant e.g. Points Poem! a photo of their friends People forget to label, annotate or refer to photos, which then makes them irrelevant. People often only photograph the nice things e.g. pretty view and forget the more ugly areas that are just as important e.g. area of pollution They can often contains too much information e.g. The Follower! people and vehicles Because they are two dimensional, depth can be deceptive. Specification: Counts Pedestrian and traffic counts are two significant examples of this enquiry skill. Appropriate methods for recording the counts should be discussed including the layout of recording sheets, instructions and the necessary information required to identify the sheet following the count (i.e. Of View! time, date, location and name of recorder). Geography fieldwork equipment can be used to measure virtually anything, but is most commonly used to perception take measurements along a river or at a beach. Below are photos and of view poem descriptions of some of the in spite most common types of geography equipment.

Transect: A transect is basically a line a long which you take measurements. You may have a transect that runs from the rural-urban fringe to the CBD or a transect that runs from the sea in land through sand dunes. In a real piece of coursework, you would explain how all your data was collected. In your description you would probably contain the following information: Date, time and location of data collection Group size Description and of view copy of data collection forms used e.g. questionnaires or counts Explanation of how the forms were used e.g. sample size, count period, count technique, etc.

Description of equipment and an explanation of its use. Instead of writing a methodology in your exam, you may be asked to write a set of instructions, explaining how data collection should be carried out. Anne Of Everything! For example you might be asked to give a set of instructions for doing a traffic count. You might say: Find a safe location near the road your are counting traffic Count the traffic in both directions for a 10 minute period A tally should be used for counting because this is easy and quick At the end of 10 minutes count up the totals for each type of vehicle. You may also be asked about of view, how your data collection could be improved.

Improvements may be made in some of the following ways: Do counts more regularly e.g. every one or two hours Do counts, surveys or indexes in more locations Do counts, surveys and indexes on different days of the The Patterns in Literature and Film week (including weekends) Get two groups doing the same survey, index or count so that an average may be taken. Specification: Data presentation techniques: A knowledge of the illustrative techniques to points of view poem present data across the topics for Paper 4 is required. This should include, various types of graphs, maps and diagrams for example line graphs, bar graphs, divided bar graphs, histograms, flow diagrams, wind rose graphs, isoline maps, scatter graphs, pie graphs, triangular graphs and radial graphs. If you are asked to workplace complete a graph or table, all the data will be there for you so read the data carefully and complete the graph/table/diagram carefully. Shows spatial distribution e.g. dot map Shows variations between regions and points of view countries e.g. choropleth map Visually interesting (interesting colours, symbols) Very bold and clear Easy to understand Clearly shows trends and shmoop crucible anomallies. Can disguise intra-region or intra-country variations e.g. choropleth map Hard to poem see trends and anomalies Very complicated to read Symbols take up to much room. Specification: Analysis: Candidates should be able to reasons for american describe the patterns in data presented in graphs and tables of results.

Reference to relevant geographical knowledge and understanding is of view, often required in questions, the interpretation of the data. Points Poem! Practice of this skill will improve success in analysis, Paper 4 questions. Look for trends and correlations (if there is not a overall trend, look for smaller trends) Look for points poem, anomalies (things that don't fit the general trend) When ever you refer to reasons trend and anomalies you must support with evidence e.g. Points Of View Poem! facts and heaney analysis figures from graph or table. Of View Poem! Try and explain trends (refer back to theory or other information that you have discovered in anne in spite of everything, your investigation) Try and explain anomalies. Specification: Formation of conclusions: Using the points poem evidence from the data, candidates should be able to make judgements on the validity of the anne frank in spite original hypothesis or aims of the assignment. Points! Reference is also required of the reliability of the the canterbury and answers collected data and points poem a critical evaluation of the chosen data collection methods. Refer back to original hypothesis Use some data to support your findings Refer to theory (if mentioned in introduction) - do your findings agree or disagree with theory State what you have learnt from your investigation. Evaluation : In an evaluation you state what went well in your research, but also how it can be improved or extended in the future. If you are asked to write an and answers, evaluation, think about the following:

What went well (keep this brief) Any problems with data collection e.g. Points Of View Poem! bad weather, missing data, sampling technique, questions, data collection form Data that could be useful in shmoop crucible, the future e.g. secondary data from government, more questionnaires (bigger sample) Additional hypothesis that you could have used Problems with time or money that could be changed in poem, the future.
