a comparasion essay In academic writing, comparison and contrast is particularly valuable because it enables you to see familiar things in new ways. Common sense says that two things are the same, but a careful comparison and swedish, contrast demonstrates their important differences. That same common sense may say that two things are totally incompatible, but when you compare and Human Vulnerability Security Essay, contrast them systematically, you discover their affinities. Making comparisons helps student writers make decisions and judgments, both in mcdonalds planning other papers (see the discussion of synthesis) and in migrants the forming theses and mcdonalds, interpretations of data and russian culture, ideas. In addition to swedish mcdonalds helping you decide which of russian culture culture two or more items is more appropriate or more useful, comparison can help you think about the unfamiliar by allowing you to contrast it with something you already know. Question: #8220;which team is going to win?#8221; To answer this question you must first evaluate each team, considering a number of features from the skill and swedish mcdonalds, readiness of the Security Essay, players on each team to the strength of the coaching. You'll probably consider averages, recent performance, health information and a host of other details. Mcdonalds? Once you've considered these aspects of each team, you will use them as criteria on in the Essay which to base a comparison. You'll compare the teams point-by-point to decide which is the stronger (these two activities often occur simultaneously because people who engage in such discussions generally agree on the criteria for comparison). Based on this comparison, you will give your answer to the initial question.

In this case the answer is a prediction, but we ask and answer similar questions about a host of other topics hundreds of times a day--where to get something to eat, which store to buy supplies from, which candidate to vote for, what task to do first. Sometimes the swedish mcdonalds, sequence is evaluate-compare-predict, at other times it is evaluate-compare-decide, or evaluate-compare-recommend, and even evaluate-compare-and then reject both options! The final term in this chain is a claim (this team will win, we should eat at 19th Century, the diner, we should buy brand X), which in academic papers tends to be called a thesis. Academic papers often employ the same analytical sequence and swedish mcdonalds, evaluative and comparatives kills as we use in every day decision-making, and we write them for Essay and a the same reason--to help us reach a decision about things we are comparing and then explain that decision to others. Swedish Mcdonalds? (1) it allows readers to easily see similarities and differences between two or more sources, (2) it accurately presents the information from the sources, (3) it presents the comparison for a purpose (i.e.: it has a thesis). Prewriting for comparison and contrast papers can be conducted visually, through charts. Draw vertical lines down the center of a sheet of when was one nest notebook paper, allowing one column for each thing to be compared and swedish, a small margin on the left. If you prefer to work on your computer, make a table using your word processing software or a spread sheet program. List the main points, topics, or features in vietnamese migrants the left margin or column and then note how each text responds or represents it in swedish the relevant column.

You might find it helpful to indicate all of the similarities using a highlighter, marks next to each similarity, or some other system. Human Vulnerability And IT? This technique will help you identify and keep track of the important similarities and differences. Mcdonalds? When a comparison and contrast assignment asks you to compare your personal experience with something else, it is important not to russian culture vs american fall into the fallacy of using personal experience to evaluate the accuracy of the other. For example, you might read an essay arguing that the traditional image of family life in which Dad goes off to work and Mom stays at swedish mcdonalds, home to russian culture culture take care of the house and mcdonalds, the children no longer describes the lives of the majority of American families. Let us suppose that you are asked to over the cuckoo's compare your family and swedish, the families of your friends with the new image that the article describes (both parents working, or a single parent working and raising the children). If your personal experience contrasts with the culture vs american, author's description of how the majority of American families live, that is not sufficient evidence for swedish mcdonalds denying (or, if your experience accords with her findings, validating) the History and a, accuracy of the author's description. The argument The traditional family in mcdonalds which I grew up demonstrates how little the author of the article knows about james dean monroe American life makes no sense because you are comparing a specific case with a generalization based on many cases. Your experience might, however, support a thesis along the line of The work pattern described in Bergmann's essay might describe general trends, but many families, like mine, found other ways to respond to mcdonalds the fall in middle-class wages that she describes or While Barbara Bergmann describes the Human Vulnerability Security Essay, reasons that many women returned to swedish the workplace in Pride Hardships of Women in the 19th Essay the last decade, my own experience shows that for some women the reasons are harder to isolate and swedish, analyze. Russian? Inexperienced academic writers often get lost when they are trying to decide on swedish mcdonalds a thesis for russian culture culture a paper that uses comparison and contrast.

Assuming that the purpose of comparison and swedish mcdonalds, contrast is to discover similarities and differences, they formulate a thesis that says something like X and Y have important similarities and differences or X is very similar to/different from Y. For example, The Republican and Essay on Canada’s National Identity: History Poem, Democratic platforms for swedish mcdonalds the 1960 American presidential election were very similar. Readers of college-level papers with such a thesis might rightly ask So? or Who cares? because college-level writing requires that you say something about russian culture vs american what you know rather than simply repeating it. Developing a good thesis for a college-level comparison and contrast paper involves your looking at those similarities and mcdonalds, differences and Pride in the Century Essay, asking yourself the crucial question, So what? What do you learn from having discovered similarities and differences? How does it affect your point of view? The answer to this question can lead to a thesis statement like A comparison of the Republican and Democratic platforms for the 1960 presidential race reveals so many similarities that one must wonder whether Americans actually have options when they go to swedish mcdonalds the polls. That's a thesis that a reader might find interesting--or at least worth arguing about.

Once you have figured out a thesis statement, or at least something that you can work with temporarily (remember, you can always revise or replace your thesis once your paper is underway), you can begin drafting. Two general structural patterns are available for vietnamese migrants papers that use comparison and contrast. Some papers adopt one or the other, but many actually blend these two patterns together in various ways. Swedish Mcdonalds? Being aware of the two basic patterns will help you make wise rhetorical choices as you draft your paper. The structures are the Human and IT, point-by-point pattern and the block pattern: The point-by-point pattern: When you use this structure, you work back and mcdonalds, forth between the Vulnerability and IT Security, sources you consider in swedish your paper discussing one point of similarity or difference at a time. Each paragraph takes one feature or point of similarity or difference and discusses each source in relation to it. For example, a paper comparing three paintings might contain one paragraph discussing the similarities and differences in the use of light and shade in the three paintings, another discussing how each painting uses color, and so on. A more complex paper might only focus on the use of color, with several paragraphs each discussing one color in the three paintings. The point-by-point pattern is essential if your material is complicated or if your paper is a long one. On Canada’s National History And A Poem? It is also a standard pattern for academic comparison and contrast essays. Swedish Mcdonalds? Most of your college professors will expect you to follow this pattern.

The block pattern: In this structure, you discuss first one item, and then the other. A comparison paper written using this pattern discusses all of the important features of one item and then, turning to the second item discusses all of its important features, explaining how they compare or contrast with those of the first item. Some very simple block comparisons describe one item and then the vs american, second and then compare them. This method rarely works for papers over three pages in length because readers do not remember the salient features of the first item once they have moved to the second (and third). Swedish Mcdonalds? The block pattern is a good approach for a short paper (five pages or less) and may be familiar from high school comparison papers. You should also consider this approach if you're not feeling too confident of your analysis of one of the two items. Using the james, principle of Nestorian order, you can begin the mcdonalds, essay with what you consider to be your lesser analysis, and when was one over nest written, then place your more convincing analysis toward the end of the swedish mcdonalds, essay, where it will make a favorable impression on your readers. As with all writing, there is no simple formula for james dean a paper that uses comparison. You will read some professionally written comparisons that use a combination of these two methods, and you may find that a combination makes sense for your own papers as well.

Some longer papers may begin with a few paragraphs using the block pattern and then move on to point-by-point pattern. This may be especially useful if the swedish mcdonalds, paper is comparing three or more articles and you want to provide a brief overview of when nest each before you begin the mcdonalds, comparison. Migrants? Once you have selected an organizational pattern for your paper, you may find it helpful to make a rough outline of swedish what will be included where and then to ask a peer to review it to see if it makes sense. Read the comparison carefully and answer the following questions: What do you like best about this comparison? (Why? How/where might the writer repeat it?) Is it clear what is being compared? (Did the writer list the source, and cite it correctly?) Is it clear why these things are being compared? (Is there a thesis? Write it out.) What is the organizational structure of the extract? (Sketch out a simple plan/diagram) Do you think the organization is effective? (Would another structure have been more effective, Why?

Map out that structure.) Does the writer include sufficient evidence to support the thesis? (Regardless of whether or not you are convinced by the thesis, please evaluate evidence to support it. Is it appropriate? If not, what other evidence might be more useful?) Are the migrants, introduction and conclusion effective? (If so, how? If not, why not? How could they be improved?) Were there any points in the comparison where you were lost because a transition was missing? (If so, where and how might it be fixed?) Were there any points where you were lost because some information seems to have been omitted? (If so, where, and what seems to mcdonalds be missing? Why do you think it might be important?) If you have read the original sources, do you find the comparison fair? (If not, why?) Was there a mechanical, grammatical, or spelling error that annoyed you as you read the paper? (If so, how could the author fix it? Did you notice this error occurring more than once?) Do not comment on vietnamese every typographical or other error you see. It is a waste of time to carefully edit a paper before it is revised! What other advice do you have for mcdonalds the author of this paper? Sandra Jamieson, Drew University. 1999.

There is no such thing as an mcdonalds, objective point of view. No matter how much we may try to ignore it, human communication always takes place in a context, through a medium, and among individuals and groups who are situated historically, politically, economically, and socially. This state of affairs is neither bad nor good. It simply is. Bias is a small word that identifies the collective influences of the entire context of a message. Politicians are certainly biased and overtly so. They belong to parties and espouse policies and Hardships in the 19th Essay, ideologies. I think we may begin to swedish reflect upon journalistic practice by noticing that the press applies a narrative structure to ambiguous events in order to create a coherent and National Identity:, causal sense of events. Does the speaker cite statistics? If so, how were the data gathered, who gathered the data, and are the data being presented fully? How does the speaker present arguments?

Is the message one-sided, or does it include alternative points of view? Does the speaker fairly present alternative arguments? Does the speaker ignore obviously conflicting arguments? If the message includes alternative points of Essay on Canada’s National Identity: History and a, view, how are those views characterized? Does the mcdonalds, speaker use positive words and images to describe his/her point of view and negative words and images to describe other points of view? Does the speaker ascribe positive motivations to his/her point of view and History and a, negative motivations to alternative points of view? Bias in the news media.

Is the news media biased toward liberals? Yes. Is the news media biased toward conservatives? Yes. These questions and answers are uninteresting because it is possible to find evidence--anecdotal and otherwise--to prove media bias of one stripe or another. Far more interesting and instructive is swedish mcdonalds, studying the when was one flew over nest written, inherent, or structural , biases of journalism as a professional practice--especially as mediated through television. I use the word bias here to swedish mcdonalds challenge its current use by partisan critics. And Prejudice: Hardships In The Essay? A more accepted, and perhaps more accurate, term would be frame. These are some of the professional frames that structure what journalists can see and how they can present what they see.

Commercial bias: The news media are money-making businesses. As such, they must deliver a good product to mcdonalds their customers to Pride and Prejudice: in the Century make a profit. The customers of the news media are advertisers. Swedish? The most important product the Vulnerability and IT, news media delivers to its customers are readers or viewers. Good is swedish, defined in numbers and and IT Security, quality of readers or viewers. The news media are biased toward conflict (re: bad news and narrative biases below) because conflict draws readers and viewers. Harmony is boring. Temporal bias: The news media are biased toward the immediate. News is what's new and fresh. Swedish Mcdonalds? To be immediate and fresh, the news must be ever-changing even when there is Vulnerability, little news to cover. Visual bias: Television (and, increasingly, newspapers) is biased toward visual depictions of news.

Television is swedish mcdonalds, nothing without pictures. Essay On Canada’s Identity: And A? Legitimate news that has no visual angle is likely to get little attention. Much of mcdonalds, what is Human and IT, important in mcdonalds, politics--policy--cannot be photographed. Bad news bias: Good news is boring (and probably does not photograph well, either). This bias makes the world look like a more dangerous place than it really is.

Plus, this bias makes politicians look far more crooked than they really are. Narrative bias: The news media cover the news in terms of stories that must have a beginning, middle, and end--in other words, a plot with antagonists and protagonists. Much of what happens in our world, however, is ambiguous. The news media apply a narrative structure to ambiguous events suggesting that these events are easily understood and have clear cause-and-effect relationships. Good storytelling requires drama, and National History, so this bias often leads journalists to add, or seek out, drama for the sake of swedish, drama. Controversy creates drama. Journalists often seek out the opinions of competing experts or officials in order to of Women in the Essay present conflict between two sides of an issue (sometimes referred to as the swedish mcdonalds, authority-disorder bias). Lastly, narrative bias leads many journalists to create, and then hang on to, master narratives--set story lines with set characters who act in Vulnerability Security, set ways.

Once a master narrative has been set, it is very difficult to get journalists to see that their narrative is simply one way, and swedish mcdonalds, not necessarily the correct or best way, of viewing people and events. Status Quo bias: The news media believe the system works. During the fiasco in Florida, recall that the news media were compelled to remind us that the Constitution was safe, the process was working, and all would be well. The mainstream news media never question the structure of the political system. The American way is the only way, politically and et marilyn monroe, socially. In fact, the American way is news. Mcdonalds? The press spends vast amounts of time in unquestioning coverage of the process of political campaigns (but less so on the process of governance). Vietnamese Migrants? This bias ensures that alternate points of view about how government might run and what government might do are effectively ignored. Fairness bias: No, this is not an oxymoron.

Ethical journalistic practice demands that reporters and editors be fair. In the news product this bias manifests as a contention between/among political actors (also re: narrative bias above). Whenever one faction or politician does something or says something newsworthy, the press is swedish, compelled by this bias to get a reaction from an opposing camp. Was One The Cuckoo's? This creates the swedish mcdonalds, illusion that the game of politics is always contentious and russian culture culture, never cooperative. This bias can also create situations in which one faction appears to mcdonalds be attacked by the press. For example, politician A announces some positive accomplishment followed by the press seeking a negative comment from politician B. The point is vietnamese, not to disparage politician A but to be fair to politician B. When politician A is a conservative, this practice appears to swedish mcdonalds be liberal bias. Expediency bias: Journalism is a competitive, deadline-driven profession. Reporters compete among themselves for prime space or air time. Vietnamese Migrants? News organizations compete for market share and reader/viewer attention.

And the 24-hour news cycle--driven by the immediacy of television and the internet--creates a situation in which the job of competing never comes to a rest. Add financial pressures to this mix--the general desire of media groups for profit margins that exceed what's normal in many other industries--and you create a bias toward information that can be obtained quickly, easily, and inexpensively. Need an mcdonalds, expert/official quote (status quo bias) to balance (fairness bias) a story (narrative bias)? Who can you get on the phone fast? Who is always ready with a quote and et marilyn, always willing to speak (i.e. say what you need them to say to balance the story)?

Who sent a press release recently? Much of deadline decision making comes down to gathering information that is swedish, readily available from sources that are well known. Glory bias: Journalists, especially television reporters, often assert themselves into the stories they cover. This happens most often in terms of proximity, i.e. to the locus of unfolding events or within the orbit of powerful political and civic actors. This bias helps journalists establish and maintain a cultural identity as knowledgeable insiders (although many journalists reject the notion that follows from this--that they are players in the game and not merely observers). The glory bias shows itself in particularly obnoxious ways in television journalism. News promos with stirring music and heroic pictures of individual reporters create the aura of omnipresence and omnipotence. I ascribe the the cuckoo's written, use of the satellite phone to this bias. Note how often it's used in swedish mcdonalds, situations in monroe, which a normal video feed should be no problem to establish, e.g. a report from Tokyo I saw recently on CNN.

The jerky pictures and fuzzy sound of the satellite phone create a romantic image of foreign adventure. Structural Bias as Theory. I have asserted that some critics of the press think of it as speaking with a unified voice with a distinct ideological bias. I have further asserted that this simplistic thinking fits the mcdonalds, needs of ideological struggle, but is hardly useful in coming to a better understanding of what is happening in the world. For that better understanding we need a theory. Simply communicating by written or spoken words introduces bias to dean et marilyn the message.

If, as asserted earlier, there is no such thing as an objective point of view, then there cannot be objective or transparent language, i.e. a one-to-one correspondence between reality and words such that I may accurately represent reality so that you experience it as I do. Language mediates our lived experiences. And our evaluation of those experiences are reflected in our language use. Rhetoric scholar James A. Berlin once said that language is never innocent. By this he meant that language cannot be neutral; it reflects and mcdonalds, structures our ideologies and world views. To speak at all is to speak politically. The practice of journalism, however, accepts a very different view of language that creates serious consequences for the news consumer. Most journalists do their jobs with little or no thought given to Poem language theory, i.e. how language works and how humans use language. Most journalists, consciously or not, accept a theory (metaphor) of language as a transparent conduit along which word-ideas are easily sent to swedish a reader or viewer who then experiences reality as portrayed by and Prejudice: of Women, the words. From George Lakoff's Moral Politics (U of Chicago P), journalism falsely asserts that: Concepts are literal and swedish, nonpartisan: The standard six-question rubric of journalism (who, what, when, where, why, how) cannot capture the migrants, complexity of issues as seen through, and expressed by, the incompatible moral systems of liberals and conservatives.

Language use is neutral: Language is associated with a conceptual system. To use the language of a moral or political conceptual system is to use and to reinforce that conceptual system. News can be reported in neutral terms: Not if #2 is correct. To choose a discourse is to choose a position. To attempt neutrality confuses the political concepts.

Is it an inheritance tax or a death tax? What could possibly be a neutral term? To use both in the name of swedish, balance is of Women 19th Century, confusing because most news articles don't have the space, and most TV treatments don't have the time, to swedish fully explain the terms and why liberals prefer one and Human and IT Security, conservatives prefer the other. There's no time or space to explain why this language difference matters (beyond political tactics) to the formation, implementation, and swedish, evaluation of policy. Russian Culture Vs American Culture? Mere use of language cannot put anyone at a disadvantage: Again, see #2. All readers and viewers share the same conceptual system: We share the same English language, i.e. its grammar. We often do not share dialects or the denotations and mcdonalds, connotations of concepts, lived experience, and monroe, ideologies. The statement I am a patriotic American means something entirely different to mcdonalds liberals and conservatives.

That difference is more than a matter of russian vs american culture, connotation. The differences in connotation spring from mcdonalds different moral constructs. Pride Of Women? What the conservative means by mcdonalds, that statement appears immoral to the liberal and vice versa. These false assumptions by journalists, rather than overt politicking, help create the political bias news consumers often detect in news reporting. A conservative will quite naturally assert a conservative world view by using concepts in ways comfortable to conservatives. The same goes for liberals. It is often pointed out that most news reporters are Democrats or vote for Human Democrats. Party affiliation, however, tells us nothing about political ideology and the moral concepts that undergird it. There are conservative Democrats and liberal Republicans. Be that as it may, the ethics of swedish mcdonalds, journalistic practice strongly urge reporters to adopt the assumptions about language listed above and the structural biases listed above.

The ethics of and Prejudice: Century, journalistic practice encourage journalists to adopt a (nonexistent) neutral language to swedish mitigate any effects of ideological bias. Essay Identity: History Poem? There simply is no concerted or sustained effort to slant the news for political purposes by mainstream news outlets. Anti-bias crusading as an elitist practice. Accuracy in Media claims the the news media are biased toward liberal politics. Swedish? Fairness Accuracy in Media claims the the news media are biased toward conservative politics. Supporters of these views see one group as right and the other as wrong.

But the reality is not that simple. Yes, AIM and FAIR each point out coverage that appears to on Canada’s History and a Poem bolster their various claims. Swedish? At times, the media do seem to be biased one way or the other. What these groups don't say, however, is that their mistrust of the media is also a mistrust of the people. Those who complain most about media bias would see themselves as able to identify it and flew over the cuckoo's nest written, resist it.

They get upset about it because they question whether the average American is able to swedish do the same. If the average American can identify it and resist it, then there is little need to get upset about bias. The AIM and FAIR web sites are full of material to help hapless Americans avoid the cognitive ravages of the evil conservatives or the slandering liberals and vs american, their media lackeys. I believe the average American is quite capable of identifying problems with news coverage. Mcdonalds? In my opinion, crusading against political bias in the news media is an elitist practice.
